    The Raging Teens

People don’t realize it wasn’t that long ago that there was no internet, no social media, back in the 1990s it was just a completely different game out there for live music. In our little rockabilly world we began to hear about a band from Boston, young dudes and a female guitar player, and eventually we got our chance to see (and hang out with) The Raging Teens!

We were pals from the first time we met them. And of course, we’ve stayed pals with Kevin, the wise-cracking lead singer now calling himself Jittery Jack, and Miss Amy Griffin, the powerhouse lead guitarist that really set these “guys” apart from all the other bands back then. Miss Amy could really play, she was awesome!

As time went on, we got to know them better, and in particular the relationship between Kevin and Amy was pretty damn funny—I’m remembering Kevin having to bring a dress to each Raging Teens show because “Amy hates wearing dresses.” Amy got a tattoo of a giant steak on her leg, and I once asked her if it… more

  • Various - Country Funk Vol. 3 1975-1982 (CD)

    25,00

The horse still bucks, the band still funks, and well… The fire still burns.

That’s right-Country Funk is back. In the summer of 2021, a new sound blew in from the dusty desert. It was a sound difficult to pin down, to codify; a sound that, like some wild horse, resisted one’s grasp. But this was no trend, no flash-in-the-pan movement, no shotgun marriage of styles, no ma’am. This sound went back decades, back to the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s when adventurous artists started to blend country hoedown harmony with the elation of gospel, the sexual thrust of the blues and a touch of inner-city grit. This was a new sound with a simple name: Country Funk. Country Funk 1969-1975, first released in 2012 and co-produced by Zach Cowie, Patrick McCarthy and Matt Sullivan, brought together a disparate group of artists that were neither bound by geography nor a shared ideology, but connected through the simple feel of their songs. Country Funk is alternatively playful and melancholic, slow jammin’ and booty-shakin’. It’s a sound both studio slick and barroom raw, as evident in the artists featured on Volume I: Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Dale Hawkins, Tony Joe White, Bobbie Gentry, Larry Jon Wilson, and many others. Just two years later, we chased Volume I with a new collection of songs for Country Funk 1967-1974 (LITA 116, 2014). Volume II didn’t let up, dealing out all the loose-talking and lap-steel twangin’ one could handle. Heavy hitters like Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and J.J. Cale shared barstools with the lesser-known voices of Bill Wilson, Donnie Fritts and Thomas Jefferson Kaye. With Country Funk Volume III 1975-1982 (LITA 194) we’re here to say there’s more funk left in the trunk yet. This time around, the jeans are tighter, the hair is bigger and the disco ball spins along to a country-synth beat. Produced and compiled by Jason Morgan (Bay Area DJ/collector) and Patrick McCarthy (co-producer/compiler of Volume I & II), the tracklist features regulars Dolly Parton, J.J. Cale, Larry Jon Wilson and Tony Joe White (whose track is released here for the first time) alongside new faces like Steven Soles, Gary & Sandy, Conway Twitty, Travis Wammack, Billy Swan, Rob Galbraith, Brian Hyland, and so many more. As the 1970s began to wane and the 1980s approached, the Country Funk pallet expanded to include disco beats, heavy Moog synth bass lines and more clavinet than you could shake a stick at. Volume III shows artists continuing to buck traditional country tropes and production while embracing modern soul, disco, and coked-up 80s synth-pop. This is the true soundtrack of the Urban Cowboy. Saddle up, partners.

What in the hell is country funk you ask? The answer is a complicated one, in part due to the fact that Country Funk is an inherently defiant genre, escaping all efforts at easy categorization. The style encompasses the elation of gospel with the sexual thrust of the blues, country hoedown harmony with inner city grit. It is alternately playful and melancholic, slow jammin’, and booty shakin’. It is both studio slick and barroom raw. And while these all may seem unlikely combinations at first glance, upon close listen, it all makes sweet sense. Light In The Attic presents _Country Funk 1969-1975_, a melting pot concoction of the music of Dale Hawkins, John Randolph Marr, Cherokee, Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Bob Darin, Jim Ford, Gray Fox, Link Wray, Bobby Charles, Tony Joe White, Dennis The Fox, Larry Jon Wilson, Bobbie Gentry, Gritz, and Johnny Jenkins.

Featuring extensive liner notes by Jessica Hundley (MOJO, The New York Times, Vogue), original album/label artwork, and new illustrations by Jess Rotter (JessRotter. Com, Rotter & Friends), this down home package is not only a treat for the ears, but a feast for the eyes. Think of this as a fantasyland where the Josie-era Meters back young Elvis singing Kris Kristofferson-penned slices of rustic American life and you’ll begin to understand the country funk vibe. It’s from the swamp to the city and all points in between.

When I die, they’ll say ’he couldn’t play shit, but he sure made it sound good!’

Hound Dog Taylor While producing this set JSP’s John Stedman remarked ’the reason this music is so tough, it’s played by tough old bastards.’ Hound Dog Taylor and The HouseRockers (Hound Dog on slide guitar, Brewer Phillips on guitar and Ted Harvey on drums) were indeed tough – both on and off stage. Greg Lawrie, a musician who toured with Hound Dog during a 1975 Australian tour (with Freddie King, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Alexis Korner and Duster Bennett) described Hound Dog and the HouseRockers as ’one of the rock ’n’ rollinest bands ever, completely authentic, 100% raw blues, real rock and roll blues. Hound Dog tore the roof off every night with his slide guitar. He was a fantastic player, very basic, but he hit what needed to be hit, no more, no less.’ Bruce Iglauer described Brewer Phillips as: ’The rawest and most energised bluesmen I ever heard. His playing and singing were totally unpolished. He took lots of musical chances and made tons of mistakes, but his playing was full of infectious rhythmic drive, and he had more fun on the bandstand than virtually anyone I’ve ever seen.’ Brewer’s guitar sound is described as ’deep rooted in the Delta blues’ and as having an ’ice pick-in-your-ear sheet-metal tone produced from his battered Telecaster executed with a thumb pick and bare fingers.
