Loistava tasoisia live taltiointeja eri radio-ohjelmista.

Ella Mae’s boogiein’, woogiein’ blend of jazz, blues and pop packs a punch to this day, and makes her one of our favorite female singers, but there has NEVER been a collection of her non-commercial or live performances (and with a sound like that, you KNOW she had to be a dynamo on stage)! So, we’ve put together this 20-track beauty consisting mostly of her 1942-1945 appearances on the Command Performances U.S.A” show, the most popular of the broadcasts over the Armed Forces Radio Services network. Includes ”Cow Cow Boogie” and ”Mr. Five by Five” with the Freddie Slack Orchestra, ”Milkman Keep Those Bottles Quiet” with the Paul Weston Orchestra, ”Poor Relation Blues,” ”Thank Your Lucky Star,” ”Blues in the Night,” ”G.I. Jive,” ”Cow Cow Boogie,” two versions of ”Tess’ Torch Song,” ”I’ll Get By,” ”Milkman Keep Those Bottles Quiet” (different version), ”Captain Kidd,” ”Buzz Me,” ”Rip Van Winkle,” ”Medley: Exactly Like You/Embraceable You,” ”Robin Hood,” and ”Jam Session on the Red River Valley.” A Collectors’ Choice Music exclusive from the female ”Package of Dynamite!”

A road paving, agency grabbing, ‘69 girl group garage band trip!

Nashville, 1966: five young girls teach themselves their instruments playing along to the radio. Initially named “The Pivots” and by the end of ‘67 christened as The Feminine Complex, they were playing out and developing a local following including radio and television appearances. They created their own versions of popular songs, a style that reflected their need to express their own experience of girlhood. Gender bending “boys’ songs” they simply changed the lyrics, modifying the major characters and pronouns creating a space for themselves inside the music where they were able to become the agents of their own wishes, needs and desires. Come ‘68, they appeared on NBC’s nationally syndicated Showcase ’68, hosted by Lloyd Thaxton paving way to their cult status.

It is not allegorical to say that in some way, they widened the entrance to the historical vacuum that a generation later would come to be filled by Riot Grrrl and rock ‘n’ roll camps for girls. The Feminine Complex were not just a good band because they were girls, or because they were the first girls. They are a good band because they are. Lucky for us, we have these recordings, so we can continue to hear why.

Features the original ‘69 album plus 11 originally unissued tracks!

  • Chicks - Sound Of The Chicks (CD)

    20,00

he Sound Of The Chicks by The Chicks – ’60s Kiwi girl group harmonies! Recorded shortly after their tour with The Pretty Things, the Donaldson sisters made The Chicks a household name in New Zealand circa ’66. Uptempo effervescent ’60s kiwi girl group pop, with the kind of stunning harmonies that could only come from sisters. Recorded in single takes to two track for the Viking label when Judy was 16 and Sue was just 14, yet they manage to capture a true fauxtown sound. NZ’s answer to Spector’s girls, reissued for the first time and pressed on colored vinyl! Right from the time The Chicks hatched out of New Zealand’s fertile rock’n’roll scene, Judy and Sue Donaldson were two of the biggest pop stars of the ’60s. Sporting matching mod hairdos and pop art outfits, the girls were unique because they not only sang, but could dance up a storm. Their mother was musical and taught the girls to sing harmonies and their neighbor Kevin Borich, future member of one of New Zealand’s wildest combos, The La de Das, taught the girls how to play guitar while they sang. The Chicks were signed to Viking in 1965 and promptly sent to the recording studio where the girls were given Chubby Checker’s ’Hucklebuck,’ and then ’Heart Of Stone.’ Recordings were done on only two tracks, meaning they had to get things right quickly. Music was already chosen and rehearsed with a young band by musical director and pianist Mike Perjanik, who also gave The Chicks their name. The girls were just 14 and 16 when ’Hucklebuck’ shot up the charts to #1, so they were quickly hustled back into the studio to record their first album The Sound Of The Chicks.

The Delrons started out as a five-piece group in 1962 at St. Brendan’s Catholic School in Brooklyn, New York, led by lead singer Mary Aiese (born 31 December 1945). Reparata was Aiese’s confirmation name, which she had taken from one of her favorite teachers at Good Shepherd Catholic grammar school, and which Aiese says sounded more marketable than either of her given names, Mary and Katherine. The other original members included Nanette Licari, Regina Gallagher, and Anne Fitzgerald, but they were soon replaced by Sheila Reilly, Carol Drobnicki, and Cathy Romeo. When Romeo was allegedly forced out of the group, she was replaced by Marge McGuire.
The trio released their crowning glory, ’I’m Nobody’s Baby Now’, in 1966.
