  • Zito Mike - Life Is Hard (CD)

    20,00

The new disc from multi-Blues Music Award-winner Mike Zito, ’Life Is Hard’ was recorded in September at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, California, with Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith producing.’Life Is Hard’ is a complete work of art for me,” says Mike Zito about the new disc. ”I believe this is the best album I’ve ever made in my life. My wife Laura and I planned this idea of pouring my heart out in music after her death from cancer. Joe, Josh and the incredible musicians were fully aware of the task at hand. They brought a lot of emotion to the music. I am so proud of this album and I know Laura would be proud as well.” The even- dozen tracks on ’Life Is Hard’ include Mike Zito originals, but also his takes on a wide variety of blues songs written by such contemporaries as Tinsley Ellis, Walter Trout, Tab Benoit and Fred James. Sprinkled in are covers from a diverse assortment of blues/ roots music icons, including Little Milton (”Lonely Man”), Stevie Wonder (”Have a Talk with God”) and Reverend Gary Davis (”Death Don’t Have No Mercy”), plus the outside- the- box blues- worthy rendering of the Guess Who classic, ”These Eyes.”

  • Burdon Eric And The Animals - Complete Live Broadcasts IV 1967-1968 (2CD) (CD)

    30,00

There were the Animals and then there were the New Animals, referred to on record as Eric Burdon And The Animals though often known as Eric Burdon And The New Animals for added clarity. The line-up on the band’s 1967 LPs consisted of Barry Jenkins (drums), Danny McCulloch (bass), John Weider (guitar and violin) and Vic Briggs (guitar), with two members of Dantalian’s Chariot joining the band in ’68; Zoot Money (keyboards) and Andy Summers (guitar), who replaced Vic Briggs. Unlike on the sometimes staid BBC recordings, this group can be heard to really stretch out on these live recordings. Whether it was a desire to evoke a late sixties feeling of freedom or merely seeing what they could get away with, it doesn’t matter, this lengthy set provides us with a much greater understanding of what The New Animals were about. Concert recordings from German TV, Swedish Radio, US TV, Italian Radio, UK TV, Australian Radio. Includes 12/16 page booklet by Dave Stephens

  • Penn Dan / Purify Bobby - The Inside Track On Bobby Purify (CD)

    18,00

The Inside Track on Bobby Purify traces the arc of one of Dan Penn’s recording projects from his original blueprint to its ultimate commercial release providing the listener with a unique behind-the-scenes experience of the whole process of songwriting and production from Dan’s side of the desk – This CD package contains a sixteen-page booklet featuring photographs and interviews with Dan about the recordings.Inspired by Solomon Burke’s soul-deep interpretation of Don’t Give Up On Me in 2002, Dan Penn reunited with his co-writers of the Grammy Award-winning song for a new project. He instinctively knew that team had more great songs in the same vein ready to be mined, but to get them dug out, they needed to dedicate some time to head down south for some quality writing and equally good eating. The demos he recorded during these songwriting sessions with his collaborators Carson Whitsett and Bucky Lindsey are a joy to hear as they feature Dan’s voice at its absolute, soulful best.Normally, these private tapes would not be made commercially available, but when they are heard alongside the ultimate versions that he produced by Bobby Purify, the vision of Dan Penn the producer is self- evident. Dan had identifed Bobby as the ideal singer for this next production having been reintroduced to him after a gap of some twenty years. Back home in his Nashville studio in 2004, Penn cut ten new tracks based on the demos featuring what Jerry Wexler referred to as € Bobby Purify’s glorious, God-given voice € . Dan called on fellow southernsoul session stars Carson Whitsett, Spooner Oldham, Reggie Young, Jimmie Johnson, David Hood and Wayne Jackson to lay down the perfect foundation for what became Bobby Purify’s 2005 album – Better To Have It. Bobby had gone totally blind a few years before these Nashville recording sessions and sadly lacked the confdence to go out on tour with this great studio band as intended. Consequently, the album was deleted and has been unavailable.

  • Allison Bernard - Luther’s Blues (2CD) (CD)

    25,00

rriving as Ruf Records marks its 30th anniversary and more than three decades
since blues guitar master Bernard Allison debuted on record, Luther’s Blues celebrates
the music of Bernard’s father Luther Allison, a true legend of the Chicago blues and a
central figure in the label’s history. The two-disc set features 20 stellar tracks from
Bernard Allison, each one a Luther Allison composition previously released on one of
Bernard’s many albums. Allison himself hand-picked the songs for the collection,
which have been lovingly remastered by Pauler Acoustics, a renowned address in the
    audiophile scene.
Anyone who’s ever attended a Bernard Allison concert or listened to his recordings
knows how much it means to him to keep his father’s musical legacy alive. ”I made a
promise since day one – to myself and to my mom Fannie Mae Allison – that I’d
always include at least one or two of my dad’s songs on every album I record,” he
says. Bernard has delivered on that promise throughout his career, performing

Luther’s songs both at concerts and on record, while forging a funky and more rock-
oriented style that differs from the traditional blues he grew up around. His dad

supported him while he was still finding his own musical voice, openly encouraging
him to ”play it how you feel it” rather than copy what came before.

BLUES CARAVAN 2023 With Ally Venable, Will Jacobs & Ashley Sherlock

Three guitars, three voices, that’s the 18th edition of Ruf’s Blues Caravan which went on tour in mid-February 2023. This time the line-up will consist of Texan bluesrocker Ally Venable, Chicago-born Berlin resident Will Jacobs and Ashley Sherlock from Manchester in the UK.
Ally Venable was only 19 years old when in 2019 her debut album ”Texas Honey” was released on Ruf Records. In the same year Ally went along with Ina Forsman and Katarina Pejak on her first Blues Caravan tour. In 2021 her second Ruf Records album ”Heart Of Fire” followed. In March 2023 her third Ruf Records album ”Real Gone“ was released, wich placed her at the top of the Blues charts. Ally says: “When I play live, I want to connect with people and for them to let go of their troubles.”
Will Jacobs hails from that U.S. metropolis whose name is linked to the blues like no other: Chicago, where in the 1950s the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf or Willie Dixon electrified the country blues of the Deep South from which they had migrated to the Windy City. And he too left his own musical thumbprint in the blues clubs of his hometown before after a couple of whistle stops he moved to the German capitol of Berlin where he still lives today. But even if his Ruf debut album ”Goldfish Blues” is audibly rooted in the eponymous genre, Jacobs spices his song material with anything that makes his neck tingle. About the album he says: ”I’d describe the music as a funky blues experience.”
Ashley Sherlock is a Manchester-based singer and guitarist whose musical career began with solo performances. Asked for his main inspirations, he cites Jeff Buckley, The Marcus King Band, The Cadillac Three, Gary Clark Jr and Chris Stapleton. His fantastic debut album ”Just A Name“ for Ruf Records was released in June 2023. About the Blues Caravan he says: ”This package tour is something I’ve wanted to take part in for quite some time. I can’t wait to get on the road and play some music!”
