BLUES CARAVAN 2023 With Ally Venable, Will Jacobs & Ashley Sherlock

Three guitars, three voices, that’s the 18th edition of Ruf’s Blues Caravan which went on tour in mid-February 2023. This time the line-up will consist of Texan bluesrocker Ally Venable, Chicago-born Berlin resident Will Jacobs and Ashley Sherlock from Manchester in the UK.
Ally Venable was only 19 years old when in 2019 her debut album ”Texas Honey” was released on Ruf Records. In the same year Ally went along with Ina Forsman and Katarina Pejak on her first Blues Caravan tour. In 2021 her second Ruf Records album ”Heart Of Fire” followed. In March 2023 her third Ruf Records album ”Real Gone“ was released, wich placed her at the top of the Blues charts. Ally says: “When I play live, I want to connect with people and for them to let go of their troubles.”
Will Jacobs hails from that U.S. metropolis whose name is linked to the blues like no other: Chicago, where in the 1950s the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf or Willie Dixon electrified the country blues of the Deep South from which they had migrated to the Windy City. And he too left his own musical thumbprint in the blues clubs of his hometown before after a couple of whistle stops he moved to the German capitol of Berlin where he still lives today. But even if his Ruf debut album ”Goldfish Blues” is audibly rooted in the eponymous genre, Jacobs spices his song material with anything that makes his neck tingle. About the album he says: ”I’d describe the music as a funky blues experience.”
Ashley Sherlock is a Manchester-based singer and guitarist whose musical career began with solo performances. Asked for his main inspirations, he cites Jeff Buckley, The Marcus King Band, The Cadillac Three, Gary Clark Jr and Chris Stapleton. His fantastic debut album ”Just A Name“ for Ruf Records was released in June 2023. About the Blues Caravan he says: ”This package tour is something I’ve wanted to take part in for quite some time. I can’t wait to get on the road and play some music!”

  • Johnson Wilko - Live At Koko 2013 (DVD)

    20,00

Only a few weeks before this gig at the venerable Koko, formerly Camden Theatre, the former Dr. Feelgood guitarist shocked the music world with the news of his terminal illness and the renunciation of any life-prolonging medical treatments. Against this background and a life expectancy of a few months, the gig recorded here in front of 1,500 fans was considered Wilko Johnson’s ’farewell’, the conclusion of a last tour scheduled at short notice. Fortunately, things turned out differently, and Johnson was even able to fly all the way to Japan to play there. But nobody knew that at the time, and so the Koko gig turned into an acclaimed, tearful farewell to one of the most honest rock’n’rollers of the past 40 years.

The building was built in 1900 and initially served as a theater. It is one of the most famous and traditional theaters and cultural venues in England, and thus was a worthy venue for the concert, which probably all who were there will never forget. Wilko Johnson rocks his way through Dr. Feelgood classics like ’Roxette’, ’Back In The Night’ or ’Sneakin’ Suspicion’ with his rhythm duo Norman Watt-Roy (bass, ex-Ian Dury & The Blockheads) and Dylan Howe (”The best drummer I ever worked with”), brings in solo tracks and ends with Chuck Berry’s ’Bye Bye Johnny’. With tears in his eyes, an enthusiastic audience bid him farewell.

The three outstanding artists on the Blues Caravan 2022 have been Katie Henry, Will Jacobs and Ghalia Volt. Nobody sounds like Katie Henry. The singer-songwriter darting between microphone, piano and Gibson SG, alighting on genres that include rock, roots, R&B, soul, funk and pop. You might catch flashes of a young Bonnie Raitt in Katie’s Blues Caravan performance, but with her raw charisma, heart-on-sleeve songcraft

Some of the films (like Wim Wenders’s The Soul of a Man and Charles Burnett’s Warming by the Devil’s Fire) use extensive fictional film sequences, generally to good effect. There’s also plenty of documentary footage, interviews, and contemporary studio performances recorded especially for these films. The last are among the best aspects of the DVDs, as the bonus material features the set’s only complete tunes. Lou Reed’s ”See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” and the ElektriK Mud Kats’ (with Chuck D. of Public Enemy) hip-hop-cum-traditional updating of Muddy Waters’s ”Mannish Boy” are among the best of them; on the other hand, a rendition of ”Cry Me a River” by Lulu (?!) is a curious choice, even with Jeff Beck on hand. The absence of lengthier vintage clips, meanwhile, is the principal drawback. For that reason alone, Clint Eastwood’s Piano Blues is the best of the lot; a musician himself, Eastwood simply lets the players play, which means we get extensive file footage of the likes of Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and Nat ”King” Cole, as well as new performances by Ray Charles, Dr. John, and others. Overall, this is a set to savor, a worthwhile investment guaranteed to grow on you over the course of repeated viewings. –Sam GrahamProduct DescriptionThis 7 DVD set features rare archival performance footage of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Eric Clapton and many more. Movie - Last Of The The Mississippi Jukes (DVD + Bonus soundtrack CD) (DVD)

    20,00

Robert Mugge’s 2003 music documentary, LAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI JUKES, explores the fading traditions of rural Mississippi juke joints. The blues was first played by itinerant musicians in juke joints on the edge of cotton plantations, later migrating into so-called urban lounges, and regional musicians still practice their craft and entertain their fans in both, as well as in modern blues clubs and casino lounges. The film focuses, in particular, on two well-known Mississippi venues: Jimmy King’s legendary Subway Lounge which, for three decades, operated in the basement of the historic, black-owned Summers Hotel in Jackson, MS; and actor Morgan Freeman’s and attorney Bill Luckett’s Ground Zero Blues Club, a contemporary blues venue in Clarksdale, MS that incorporates the design elements, menu, and spirit of a traditional juke. The story of Mississippi jukes is told by blues historians Dick Waterman and Steve Cheseborough, by the club owners, by local politicians, and by participating musicians. The musicians also demonstrate styles of blues that originated in the Mississippi Delta and elsewhere around the state. For instance, performing at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale are Alvin Youngblood Hart with Sam Carr and Anthony Sherrod. Performing at the Subway Lounge in Jackson are Bobby Rush, Chris Thomas King, Vasti Jackson, Patrice Moncell, Eddie Cotton, Greg ”Fingers” Taylor, Lucille, Abdul Rasheed, Levon Lindsey, J.T. Watkins, Dennis Fountain, Pat Brown, George Jackson, Steve Cheseborough, Casey Phillips, Jimmy King, David Hughes, Virgil Brawley, and the Subway’s two alternating house bands: the House Rockers and the King Edward Blues Band. LAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI JUKES looks at the buildings, the landscapes, and the communities where the blues began, and it examines how original blues traditions have evolved over time, carried into a new century by committed musicians and club owners, both in Mississippi and around the world.

Forsman Ina, Katarina Pejak & Ally Venable - Blues Caravan 2019 (CD+DVD) (CD)

    20,00

The Blues Caravan rolled again. In 2019 – just like every year since the first trek back in 2005 – you could experience a night of house-rocking live music, as three unique artists hit the stage at clubs across the US and Europe. On this CD + DVD live album you get chance to see and hear the hottest insider tips of the scene again! The concert was recorded on 15th February 2019 at Café Hahn in Koblenz! Here are your favorite musicians from the Blues Caravan 2019. Ina Forsman is no stranger to anyone who’s serious about modern blues. The Finland-born belter lit up the Blues Caravan back in 2016, when we first heard her head-turning smoky vocal and the material from that year’s acclaimed self-titled debut album (dubbed ”joyous” by Classic Rock). This time, Ina returns to the Caravan with the speaker-rattling soul, blues, Latin and acid-jazz flavours of her upcoming second album, Been Meaning To Tell You. ”I’ll be bringing a bunch of as-yet-unheard songs,” she says, ”as well as some funky hidden treasures from back in the day. It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime tour, full of raw female power.” And they don’t come much more powerful than Ally Venable. Adding her modern twist to the proud heritage of Texas blues, this Lone Star State gunslinger has gathered armfuls of awards for her burn-it-down guitar style and the original songs of her recent Puppet Show release. Now, as she lights up the Blues Caravan 2019 – ably backed by the locomotive rhythm section of Roger Innis (bass) and Elijah Owings (drums) – you’ll walk in curious and leave as a convert. ”I’m excited to bring my show and my Texas-influenced guitar slingin’ background to this Blues Caravan,” says Ally. ”When I play live, I want to connect with people and for them to let go of their troubles.” There must be something in the water in Belgrade. The Serbian capital has already given us Ruf legend Ana Popovic – and Katarina Pejak promises to make the same impact. With her soulful piano-playing, purred jazz vocal and sneak previews of the material set to appear on her forthcoming Mike Zito-produced album, this Berklee College Of Music graduate will have the crowd in her hand. ”My shows provide a blend of blues, country, jazz and rock ’n’ roll wrapped in a piano-driven sound,” says Katarina. ”Between me and the other two ladies, the audience will get a 360 tour around the crossroads where blues meets with other genres.”

The critics agree that he is playing in the same league with Johnny Winter or Rory Gallagher.

The band interrupted their US tour to fly over to Germany for this gig, so they were in perfect shape and raised the tension from the opener ’House Of Blue Lights’ over the popular ’One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer’ and the current hit single ’Who Do You Love’ to the furious finale with Chuck Berry’s ’Reelin’ And Rockin’.

Edwards "Honeyboy" David - I`m Gonna Tell You Something That I Know – Live At The G Spot CD+DVD (CD)

    22,00

Blues Legend’s final recorded show on CD/DVD combo David “Honeyboy” Edwards was the last of the great Mississippi Delta bluesmen. Born is Shaw, Mississippi, on June 28, 1915, his life was intertwined with almost every blues legend including Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson, Sunnlyand Slim, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and many more. In early 2010, Honeyboy was awarded the GrammyLifetime Achievement Award, and later that year returned to Los Angeles to perform at the G Spot, nimbly accompanied by Jeff Dale & The South Woodlawners and his long-time friend and manager, Michael Frank. Even at 95 years old, Honeyboy was still singing and playing like a man of less than half that age. That show turned out to be the last time Honeyboy was filmed and recorded. The performance is now available to be seen and heard on I’m Gonna Tell You Somethin’ That I Know – a CD/DVD combo documenting that historic appearance.

The shows’ 9 songs (both originals and classics) are contained on both formats, and the CD contains a bonus version of “That’s Alright.” The DVD contains “Honeyboy Tells You Something That He Knows” – over 20 minutes of Edwards giving advice to musicians and telling stories of his life, including vividly recalling the night Robert Johnson died, tales of Charlie Patton, Big Walter Horton, and others, and much more. Honeyboy lived strong into his 96th year, and was part of many seminal moments in blues history. I’m Gonna Tell You Somethin’ I Know captures the timeless, evocative power of Honeyboy, documents his warmth and humor, and shows his palpable connection to Jeff Dale, one of his “sons of the blues.

The Folksong Revival was a dynamic cultural event with its origins in the early 20th century. By the mid-1960s, it had captured American popular music, inspired a generation of folklorists, and served to reintroduce the United States to its vernacular musical roots. Fortunately some of the legendary artists of the 1920s and 1930s were rediscovered and performed at festivals and concerts.

This DVD illustrates well the mingling of old and new within the framework of old-time, cajun, blues and folk music. It focuses on traditional instruments, i.e. the ancient mouth bow, autoharp, fiddle, banjo, accordion, diddley-bow, as well as the piano and guitar.
