  • Murphy Jimmy - Southern Roots (Käytetty CD)

    11,00

    ”The Legendary Starday-Rem Sessions.

Only the most devoted country fan will have heard of Jimmy Murphy; a singer inspired by the folk-country and thriving gospel traditions of the 1930s and 40s. Murphy recorded a handful of albums over the course of 20 years, which were eventually confined to the vaults of Columbia and RCA. In the late 70s CBS rediscovered him on their ”Rockabilly Classics” release, a decade later Bear Family’s collection, ”Sixteen Tons Of Rock’n’Roll” delved further into Murphy’s catalogue, but at last Ace anthologises his recordings with the commitment it deserves.

Despite his relative obscurity, Murphy was an outstanding guitarist. He was also a writer of memorable songs and hymns with a down-home and bluesy quality that would impress even the most secular country fan. A hardened traditionalist at the cost of his celebrity, Murphy refused to conform to the norms of the Nashville music scene; in the 60s and 70s he was probably the only musician signed to a major label, playing mostly in the traditional vein. His wife, Florine, occasionally joined him on some of his recordings, with a peg-on-the-nose voice and a cool guitar strumming rhythm that’s hard to forget.

Sadly, Murphy died in 1981 of a heart attack. He left behind eight children and many grandchildren. He didn’t leave behind any hits, but then chart success has never determined talent and originality among the roots music fraternity, and Jimmy Murphy had both in abundance.”

  • Wooley Sheb - Rawhide – How The West Was Won (Käytetty CD)

    11,00

Oklahoma-born Sheb Wooley had pursued a country singing career before his skill with horses launched him into the movies. In 1959, he began a seven-year role as trail scout Pete Nolan on the TV series, ’Rawhide’. Wooley recorded the MGM album, ’Songs From The Days Of Rawhide’, in 1960 with such Hollywood studio aces as guitarist Billy Strange. Along with the TV theme, it includes Western standards (Cattle Call) and some Wooley originals (Indian Maiden). Three years later, Wooley was in Nashville to record an album to complement the MGM blockbuster, ’How The West Was Won’. A conscious ’theme’ album, it traced the Westward migration in songs, nine of which Wooley wrote. This 24-track collection presents the entirety of Wooley’s two ’Pete Nolan’ era Western albums.

Haggard Merle - Working in Tennessee (Käytetty CD)

    13,00

Working in Tennessee, Merle Haggard’s second album for Vanguard, plays a little slower and softer than 2010’s I Am What I Am, a record where Hag gently dwelled on his mortality. There are times where his age crosses his mind — particularly on Sometimes I Dream,” where he casually lists off things that aren’t likely to pass his way again — but generally, he’s ready to ”Laugh It Off” as he gripes about what’s playing on the radio, smokes a little dope, and enjoys playing a little bit of blues as he looks back to the past, even cutting a couple of old favorites (”Cocaine Blues,” ”Jackson”) and a new version of ”Working Man Blues.” Hag never rushes things, never turns up the volume, his western swing now bearing a closer resemblance to the gentlemanly amiability of Hank Thompson instead of the wild, woolly Bob Wills. He’s proceeding at the pace of a 74-year-old legend with nothing to prove, yet he’s not resting on his laurels, he’s just doing what he’s always done: singing songs so expertly his virtuosity almost goes unnoticed.”
