Campbell Glen - Sings For The King (CD)

    10,00

Glen Campbell Sings for The King arrives on November 16, premiering never-before-released recordings made by Campbell for his friend Presley.  It will be released on CD, & LIMITED EDITION VINYL LP.

Between 1964 and 1968, Glen was engaged by the songwriting team of Ben Weisman and Sid Wayne to record fully-produced studio versions of songs intended for Elvis.  The King recorded more songs by Weisman than any other songwriter, cutting 57 of the composer’s tunes.  Glen was asked to match Elvis’ pitch and sound on these luxury demos; naturally, he also played guitar on the sessions.

Twelve of the 18 tracks on Glen Campbell Sings for The King were picked up and recorded by Elvis, including the title songs from his movies such as Spinout, Clambake, and Easy Come, Easy Go, the latter of which is streaming now.  It’s also available as an “instant grat” download to purchasers of the digital version of the album.

Presley himself appears on the album with the opening track, a posthumous duet on “We Call On Him.”  The gospel song is joined by country numbers, ballads, and rock-and-roll.  (One of the tracks never recorded by Elvis, “Love on the Rocks,”  left Neil Diamond free to make the title his own years later!)   The two artists first met as early as 1956.  Author Alan Light writes in the liner notes, “With their genre-bending musical exploration and rural Southern roots, it’s no surprise that Glen Campbell and Elvis Presley formed something of a mutual admiration society.”  Capitol also quotes Campbell:  “Elvis and I were brought up the same humble way, picking cotton and looking at the north end of a south-bound mule. I saw him in the rough [at an early concert]…He was so electrifying.”  As Campbell ascended to the ranks of Los Angeles’ top session guitarists, he played on one memorable Elvis track: “Viva Las Vegas.”

Glen and Elvis remained friends throughout their lifetimes, and Campbell even continued to record for Weisman and Wayne after his breakthrough to superstardom in 1967.  This tribute to the remarkable talents of both artists arrives on November 16 from Capitol/UMe.

  • Presley Elvis - From Elvis In Memphis (Super Audio CD) (CD)

    60,00

    Limited SACD edition.

A record by Elvis, produced in Tennessee. What’s so special about that? Surely everyone knows that the King sobbed his early songs into the local radio microphones. But From Elvis in Memphis is far more than just one of around 40 albums which he produced during the course of 35 years. ”This marks what is probably the most impressive comeback in the entire history of pop music,” enthused the normally reticent New York Times. What had happened? In 1969, after a 14-year meteoric career in show business and movies, and an exemplary PR campaign, Elvis returned to his hometown to record these songs which, in their style, are reminiscent of those recorded in the Fifties for Sun Records. Alongside the lavishly mixed pop and blues numbers (”Power Of My Love”) and country sound (”I’m Movin’ On”), there is also one of the greatest chart-busters and heart-breakers of a whole generation: ”In The Ghetto.”

Uudet ja parhaat koskaan miksaukset. NYT VARASTOSSA!

Having just concluded an immensely successful sell-out tour in April, that was filmed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the 1972 documentary Elvis On Tour, confidence in Elvis’ camp was high as all four shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden were sold out along with the rest of the June tour. Any reticence that Elvis may still have had about performing in the Big Apple were soon allayed as the noise from the MSG audiences was deafening. Summing up the triumph, The New York Times ‘Arts and Leisure’ headline read “Like A Prince From Another Planet”.

Elvis As Recorded at Madison Square Garden featuring the evening show on June 10 was rush-released later in the month, and sold a million copies in the U.S. in a matter of weeks. Total U.S. sales to date are now in excess of 3 million thereby achieving triple-platinum status. The afternoon show was eventually issued by RCA in 1997, 20-years after Elvis’ passing, as An Afternoon In The Garden.

This belated 50th Anniversary FTD edition celebrates these legendary shows with newly mixed versions of both shows by Memphian recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang. Disc 3 features the original press conference recorded at the New York Hilton, June 9.

Packaged in our ‘sessions’ style 8” x 8” slipcase, this deluxe 3-CD contains a 20-page color booklet, great photos, memorabilia, press conference transcript and recollections by the late Phil Gelormine.
