  • Crow - Best of (LP)

    22,00

A hard-charging blues-rock garage band out of Minneapolis led by the passionate singing of David Wagner, Crow had their big break when a track from the group’s debut album for independent label Amaret Records, Evil Woman (Don’t Play Your Games with Me),” became a big national radio hit in 1969. But there were a couple of problems. First, the album’s producers had added an uptown R&B horn chart to the song against the band’s wishes, which meant that when it became a hit, Crow, who had no horn players, had a tough time promoting it on the playing circuit, becoming essentially two different bands, the live one and the studio one. More seriously, Amaret was too small a label to support a big national hit, and fans of the band often ended up with no place to purchase the album. It was ultimately too much for Crow to overcome, and the band struggled through two more albums before folding in 1971. Crow probably deserved a better fate, because it was a solid band, the studio version sounding like a funky version of Blood, Sweat & Tears while the touring version sounded like a harder-edged Doobie Brothers crossed, say, with the Trashmen. This set collects essential tracks from that Amaret run, and includes ”Evil Woman,” which started it all, an extended version of the follow-up single, ”Cottage Cheese,” the should-have-been-a-classic ”(Don’t Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the) King of Rock and Roll,” and solid album tracks like ”Watch That Cat” and ”Keeps Me Running,” as well as a previously unreleased demo version of the Beatles’ ”When I Get Home,” which gives the song a wonderful and lightly funky shuffle rhythm. Crow should have been a big national act, and the proof of that is here, but the history of rock & roll is full of these kinds of stories, stories that have more could-haves and should-haves attached to them than history will allow.”

  • Various - In Fuzz We Trust 2LP (LP)

    10,00

In Fuzz We Trust is nothing short of the Greatest Tribute Album Ever Recorded. Nowhere in history have as many legendary performers appeared on one record, for the purpose of saluting another artist. In this case, the artist is the band that instigated the 80’s Garage Revival that continues to this day – The Fuzztones. Preaching the Garage (and Psych) gospel since their inception in 1980, The Fuzztones influenced countless bands worldwide with their enigmatic image, high velocity performance and personalized interpretations. Fact is, even if The Fuzztones had never written a song in their long and illustrious career, they succeeded in accomplishing something much more important, even profound… they resurrected a music style that had only existed from (roughly) 1966 to 1967, and through relentless touring and recording, kept it alive for over 33 years. Initially, the band’s mission was to introduce this long-lost music to the world, and did so by covering obscure classics, many by artists who appear on this album. When the Beatles and Stones started out, they covered a lot of Motown and blues stuff, in an attempt to turn people on to it,” points out head Fuzztone, Rudi Protrudi, ”and that’s what we wanted to do as well.” The music they chose to cover was so obscure that most of their audience assumed they were originals, and the band could easily have kept it that way. Instead, Rudi joined forces with Germany’s Music Maniac label and released the album, ”Songs We Taught The Fuzztones,” a collection of original versions of songs made famous by The Fuzztones. This record, released in 1993, turned Fuzztones fans on to the original artists, hence beginning the ”purist” movement that eventually spawned the emergence of reunited 60’s Garage and Psych legends, as well as events such as Cavestomp, which brought them and their newfound fan base together. But The Fuzztones are much more than a cover band. Their original material bears their own distinctive sound – which owes as much to Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, the Stooges and the Doors, as to the 60’s Garage and Psych they obviously adore. When you hear The Fuzztones, there’s no mistaking them for someone else. This album is the last of a three-part trilogy of Fuzztones tribute albums that began with ”Fuzztones Illegitimate Spawn 1” and it’s successor, ”2.” Both double CD collections featured bands from all around the world, paying homage to the band that inspired them. Now we come full circle with a collection of Fuzztones classics, covered by the legendary bands that inspired The Fuzztones!”

  • Los Mockers - Do It Again! (LP)

    18,00

he story of Los Mockers is truly unusual. Formed in Montevideo in 1963, they were one of the first Uruguayan R&B bands, recorded one LP and a couple of singles in Argentina in 1966 and broke up one year later, truncating a promising career when the band members had just turned 20.Unexpectedly, from the early 80s on their only LP was reissued by independent labels in different parts of the world: Uruguay, Spain, the US, Sweden. This established the reputation of Los Mockers as a cult band beyond their country of origin. Their influence has kept on growing since then and new generations of bands keep discovering their music, playing it live and recording their own versions of Mockers songs.DO IT AGAIN!In 2006, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their legendary LP, Los Mockers decided to realise a long-held dream: the original line-up got back together, with the exception of drummer Beto Freigedo, who had died years before in a motorbike accident. With the collaboration of the great drummer Germán Vilella (formerly of Los Rodríguez), some intense and emotional recording sessions took place. The reunion became a celebration and the feeling came back as if they’d never been apart, producing a handful of new songs where the incredible energy and the typical vocal strength of Los Mockers are present again.Side A of this record features these new tracks and is completed with a document from the band’s origins: one of their first recordings, unissued until now, registered in 1965 in the Radio Ariel radio station of Montevideo. The title couldn’t be more fitting: ’Time Is On My Side’.MOCKERMANIAMeanwhile, numerous bands from different countries have revisited the classic songs of Los Mockers. Side B contains a surprising selection of covers, some faithful to the original, others more personal and imaginative. However, they all represent a warm tribute by a new generation of bands that found inspiration in those pioneering recordings by Los Mockers.
