  • Cogan Alma - The Very Best of Alma Cogan – He Just Couldn’t (CD)

    15,00

Universally known as ’The girl with the laugh in her voice’, ALMA COGAN was The UK’s very first Princess of Pop.

She cut her very first record, ’To Be Worthy Of You’, on her 20th birthday in March 1952, and was rewarded with a Top 5 hit.

Alma topped the UK charts with ’Dreamboat’ in 1955, and during the 1950s she registered twenty-three hit Records in Britain, far more than any other female singer.

This is the first compilation to include all her UK hits, including further ’signature songs’ like ’Bell Bottom Blues’, ’I Can’t Tell A Waltz From A Tango’, ’Never Do A Tango With An Eskimo’ and ’Last Night On The Back Porch’, alongside the pick of her other singles.

Also featured are a number of her celebrated R&R covers, e.g. ’Tweedle Dee’, ’Why Do Fools Fall In Love’, ’Lucky Lips’, ’Fabulous’, ’This Little Girl’s Gone Rockin” and ’Pink Shoelaces’.

She enjoyed considerable international success, notably in Japan, where ’He Just Couldn’t Resist Her With Her Pocket Transistor’ topped the charts.

Alma died in 1966 at the tragically young age of thirty-four, at more or less the peak of her popularity, following a battle with ovarian cancer.

  • Martin Dean - French Style (Pink) (LP)

    29,90

    Coloured Vinyl, High Quality

In 1962 Martin left his record label Capitol and signed with Frank Sinatra’s new label Reprise. His debut album for them was French Style, released in April of that year. Martin had recently released an album of songs sung in Italian and would go on to record an album of Latino material at the end of that year. French Style came in between the two, and collected a number of songs about France ably arranged by conductor Neal Hefti. At this point, France must have seemed impossibly glamorous, with Brigitte Bardot swanning around St Tropez, while Grace Kelly raced her sports car around the clifftops of Cannes in Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief. Beatniks filled the jazz cafés, where the New Wave of French cinema was being discussed over Disques Bleu and café au lait. What’s more, the majority of songs in this collection focus on Paris – and the City of Lights has been a magnet for Americans ever since the days when Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald and Cole Porter first took up residence there. French Style is delivered with his trademark charm and ease. So, bon appetit!

  • Various - Smoking Reefers and Kicking the Gong (CD)

    13,00

Whatever its nomenclature, entertainers have long enjoyed a ’special relationship’ with cannabis/marijuana, particularly musicians and singers, who’ve long delighted in extolling the joys of recreational drugs.

This compilation deals with the leaf’s early years, when it was generally referred to as ’Reefer’ (sometimes, ’Gage’, ’Pot’, or ’Tea’), and was pretty much the exclusive domain of Jazz and Blues musicians.

The oldest sides featured herein are a couple of the earliest known druggies’ anthems, ’Willie the Chimney Sweeper’ (an homage to smoking opium, a practice then widely known as ’kicking the gong’) and ’Dope Head Blues’.

Some major artistes feature on this set, notably Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Champion Jack Dupree and The Ink Spots.

Mind you, many of the song titles are a dead giveaway: ’Reefer Man’, ’Sweet Marijuana Brown’, ’Reefer Head Woman’, ’Who Put The Benzedrine In Mrs Murphy’s Ovaltine?’, ’The Reefer Song (If You’re A Viper)’, etc.

They were early protégées of Connee Boswell and backed her on several sides as a quartet.
