  • Sun Ra & His Orchestra - Rocket Number Nine 10″EP (10``LP)

    15,00

Limited edition colored ten inch vinyl pressing. Among Sun Ra’s most famous and jet-propelled anthems, ”Rocket Number Nine” is heard here in one of the earliest renditions from a marathon June 1960 session, with a staggering, swaggering, hip-bop beat. Ignition. Liftoff. ”Rocket Number Nine Take Off for the Planet Venus, Zoom Zoom! Up in the air! Zoom! Up!” Paired with originally unknown recordings, including the driving, bossa nova-infused ”Ankhnation” from 1959 and ”Project Black Mass” from 1962. More energized and driving in contrast with the rather laconic subsequent versions appearing elsewhere, ”Ankhnation” features a feast of traded solos from assorted Arkestral all-stars such as John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, and Hobart Dotson. ”Project Black Mass” is straight from the Vaults of Mystery: Voice of the Cosmos in spirit-science precision. Romping, rumbling low tones, glittering, twinkling stars, wanderful wondering. Architecture of moments, milestones of Blackness. Extension out.

  • Various - Hells Bells – Swing Candies For Doomsdays (10``LP)

It was neither a ‘stormy Monday’, nor ‘a similar bad Tuesday’, when the Retrograph got a call for doing the artwork of old pal Little Victor’s ‘Lo-Fi Recordings’ vinyl platter for Stag-O-Lee. We came in touch and shortly after, the idea of compiling weird stuff for ‘the 5th season’ was born. It would have been way too easy concentrating on titles with ‘Ghost’, ‘Spook’ or ‘Devil’ simply in the titles of often very boring and only fast or unbelievable lame tracks, so we went ahead doing something more subtle and special, spanning the decades from the 1920s through the 1940s in a very wild manner. At last, we kicked the term ‘Halloween’ as it should be played the whole year through and every track is solid sending stuff for sophisticated Lindy Hop, Shag or Balboa-dancing.

It was so much fun digging through tons of old 78 rpm records, recording lots of material and listening to them over and over again,

kicking out, taking in, discovering stuff that was unheard over the last years and seemed sleeping til dawn. – Then came the artwork and we wanted to do something special here as well, so we have taken an old Vocalion shellac sleeve from the 30s as a base for our own needs, trying to preserve the feel of old records from about eight decades ago. I am sure, it is a nice anachronism in a time, where it is possible, simply pressing a button on the telephone makes you hear whatever you like, almost everything and everywhere. – I hope, there will be still lots of black holes in the world wide web in future.

The original records on this disc are from my personal collection that has grown now for about 40 years. Hence the sound cannot be perfect state of the art, but we tried our best to preserve these mighty fine tunes for the future. So enjoy and I hope, you’ll love them and play them over and over and … cry for more.

  • Calloway Cab - Let The Bells Keep Ringin` (10``LP)

    20,00

10“-LP with 8 songs Calloway recorded for Bell records!

Minnie The Moocher was effervescent bandleader Cab Calloway’s signature theme for more than
half a century. He first waxed the ditty in 1931, and his sparkling reprise in the 1980 film ’The Blues
Brothers’ was one of its indelible highlights.

Arthur Shimkin’s BELL RECORDS was no doubt delighted to bring Cab aboard in 1954. The
New York-based label specialized in soundalike versions of current hits at bargain list prices, but no
way would Cab’s leonine roar ever be mistaken for that of anyone else. The eight songs Calloway
waxed for BELL constitute this 10-inch LP, and there are some real surprises: Cab dives into Carl
Smith’s country romp “Hey Joe” and Teresa Brewer’s perky “Jilted” as though they were conceived
for him (ditto Jim Lowe’s dramatic Gambler’s Guitar and the majestic Unchained Melody). Even
Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters’ steamy R&B smash “Such A Night” and Frank Sinatra’s
suave “Learnin’ The Blues” were fair game for Calloway’s singular pipes and he served up a fresh,
invigorating version of Minnie The Moocher for BELL’s fast-growing catalog.
