form a frothing tryptic of irresistible dance songs. First released in the States, these sunny melodies very
rapidly spread around the world following the First World War…
After having first explored a bouquet of female singers (Vol. I), followed by the wild extravagance of this music
(Vol. II) and finally its links to Blues (Vol. III), El Vidocq here focuses on the impact and influences of Mambo,
Cha-cha-cha and Calypso within other regions of the world. Volume quatro: Europe! A hip-swaying road trip
through Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and last but not least France. Benefitting from markedly
mixed ensembles – for these countries often opened their arms to exiled musicians – the songs here
spotlighted are all strongly influenced by the Caribbean while yet retaining their own national flavors.
How can you not succumb to “La Suppa de Pichon” by Belgium’s Los Merecumbes, or to the “Cha Cha Twist” by

What a relief to escape the humdrum, to conquer one’s ennui, to spice up the too-long evenings stuck at
home… Here’s a proposition: SEX-O-RAMA!!! Oh la la, such an aptly named compilation! Rascally El
Vidocq this time dares to sway outside his comfort zone. Here humanity’s oldest obsession is tackled
tastefully, with class. The selection is amusing, but ever well-meaning, for these songs are as stimulating
to listen to as they are to dance to! Naturally, our intrepid collector had to roam beyond his habitual ‘50s
and ‘60s, for the real sexual revolution did occur a tad later… A few seductive caresses of varying
insistence (Michele Mercier, Geraldine), a few advances “in due and proper form” (naughty Prince Buster!),
an eloquent series of moans and groans (Rita, Armando Travaioli, Noelia Noel), chance encounters
(intransigent Jean Yanne)… not to mention a few exquisite parodies (Jacqueline Mayand and Bourvil, as
drole as they are tender)… So hesitate no longer! Stop biting your lip! The sap is rising, as they say, so

Clark Sonny - Cool Struttin´(180 gram) (LP)€27,00
Conrad Yeatis Clark, otherwise known as Sonny Clark, was in many ways the quintessential hard bop pianist. Possessed of an enviable lyrical flow and a wealth of inventive melodic ideas that unfurled with clarity and without fuss, Clark had a deeply rooted feeling for the blues.
After moving from his hometown of Pittsburgh to New York, Clark emerged as a ubiquitous presence on Blue Note starting in 1957. It was on his fifth Blue Note date as a leader that Clark arrived at his masterwork, Cool Struttin’, recorded in January 1958 with a top-shelf quintet featuring Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Paul Chambers on bass, and ‘Philly’ Joe Jones on drums. The album has only grown in stature as a timeless hard bop classic since Clark’s premature death at age 31 in 1963.
This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
Smith Jimmy - Back At The Chicken Shack (180 gram) (LP)€27,00
Jimmy Smith was a self-taught pianist who abandoned the instrument in 1954 in favour of the Hammond B3 organ, renting a Philadelphia warehouse and woodshedding for a year until he emerged with a revolutionary style that immediately caught the ear of Alfred Lion. The Blue Note boss dubbed him The Incredible Jimmy Smith and recorded the B3 innovator as frequently as he could between 1956 and 1963.
It’s a testament to Smith’s volcanic creativity that he recorded not one but two soul jazz classics — Midnight Special and Back at the Chicken Shack — when he entered Rudy Van Gelder’s studio on April 25, 1960 with Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Donald Bailey on drums.

Davis Miles - Ascenseur Pour L’Echafaud (180 gram, Coloured) (LP)€20,00
It was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957. The album features the musical cues for the 1958 Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l’Échafaud.
Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle’s assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film’s soundtrack – possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet’s recording for Roger Vadim’s Sait-on jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957.
Davis was booked to perform at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris for November 1957. Rappeneau introduced him to Malle, and Davis agreed to record the music after attending a private screening. On December 4, he brought his four sidemen to the recording studio without having had them prepare anything. Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any precomposed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background.
The soundtrack was not released on its own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album Jazz Track which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo or Small Group.
This soundtrack might also be referred to as ”Elevator to the Gallows (French: Ascenseur pour l’échafaud; previously known as Frantic in the US), also known as Lift to the Scaffold (UK)”.

Barney Kessel Live At The Jazz Mill 1954 (Vinyl LP) A fantastic addition to the Barney Kessel catalog of the 50s – a never-heard live set that has the guitarist in form that’s every bit as strong as his famous albums for Contemporary Records! In fact, the strength of the recording may well capture Kessel at a level that beats those sessions – as Barney’s playing live, with a bit more bite – and really grabs us with the strong tone on his solos – and the sense of energy he gets in a quartet that also includes a young Pete Jolly on piano! The recording quality is excellent – crystal-clear, and very focused – and the set isn’t one of those lost tapes that should have stayed ”lost” – but instead a real lost chapter in Barney’s tremendous career. Ellington Duke, Mingus Charles & Roach Max - Money Jungle + 3 bonus tracks (LP)€18,00
The music is superb and to my ear sounds quite “out there” and surprisingly modern. Great playing by all three musicians. The vinyl is excellent – flat and quiet and the music sounds real which is the whole point I suppose. Piano always sounds a little odd in old recordings (I’m not sure why but I’ve been told that recording piano well is very hard ) – and it does sound a little “strained” in places but given the age of the recording it is pretty excellent. Superb. A good investment.

Kessel Barney - Live At The Jazz Mill 1954, Vol 2 (LP)
This is another album of relaxed, swingin’ jazz from Kessel and the Jazz Millers–Pete Jolly-piano, Art Kile-drums, and Gene Stoffel-bass. Like the first volume, these tapes come from a young audiophile who brought his tape machine into the club to record various performers playing there. The sound is warm and actually pretty clean sounding, with a feel of the ’50s. Both volumes are issued on the Modern Harmonic label which is part of the Sundazed label. The disc slips into a pocket in the wallet style cardboard package. There’s a nice two page essay on the inside panels and a track list, photo of the group, and recording info on the back cover.
This is a good chance for Kessel and/or jazz guitar fans in general to hear a true master of jazz guitar, playing with a small sympathetic group. The ’50s is when Kessel was either near or at the top of jazz polls, and these live tapes will show why that was. Jolly’s piano is also a great feature here. His playing accents Kessel’s lyrical style–listen to ”Tea For Two” as just one example of how well they play together.
Like the first volume, this album is filled with standards like ”Indian Summer”, ”Blue Moon” (with a nice bass solo), ”I Can’t Get Started” (a beautiful version), ”Godchild” (Kessel’s playing is especially lyrical), and a couple of other tunes. The small club ambience helps define this music–a good example of jazz in a small club that didn’t last a year before closing it’s doors. That fact makes these tapes not only rare, but historic as well. And Kessel’s and the group’s relaxed familiarity with these tunes makes for a good listening experience.
Kessel fans should check out both volumes. Both are full of Kessel in his prime, backed by a fine pianist and a rhythm section that is never intrusive yet pushed the music along nicely. For swinging, fluid, ’50s jazz guitar, both volumes deserve attention from fans. Both are good examples of what small gigs were like during this era. Can you imagine what it would be like to walk into a small club like the Jazz Mill and hear Kessel during his best years? Both volumes can sit next to other Kessel albums from this prime era.
