  • Country Soul Of Margaret Lewis EP-0

Lewis Margaret - Country Soul Of Margaret Lewis EP (7 single/EP)

    13,00

The latest in our series of 4-track EPs features Margaret Lewis’ RAM recordings. Country and Soul are never that far apart and in Margaret Lewis’s vocal delivery, underpinned by Grace Tennessee’s shimmering guitar, they meld seamlessly. As if to prove this, the opening cut, ’Reconsider Me’, was a hit for Johnny Adams in 1969. Margaret’s world-weary, almost resigned vocal tells a story that resonates across class and colour. The waltz time of the plaintive ’It’s Alright (You Can Go)’ exposes Margaret’s Louisiana roots, adding another dimension to the varied sounds of this EP. Opening Side 2 is an out-and-out soul groove that is setting the UK’s New Breed dance scene alight, ’Somethin’s Wrong Baby’. Although first issued in 1961 it presages the funkier sounds of later that decade, with a proto-James Brown style riff and great greasy sax all guaranteed to get the party started. The closing track opens with a sensuous guitar line from Grace Tennessee before Margaret’s bluesy vocal kicks in; a track that has been causing outbreaks of the stroll in dancehalls coast to coast. A limited edition of 1000 copies.

JAMES CARR: These Arms Of Mine / Let’s Face Facts Many people’s favourite soul singer James Carr performs two classic songs that were discovered on Goldwax’s tapes some years back but appear on a single for the first time. These Arms Of Mine was an Otis classic, admired and recorded by many but matched only by Carr’s rendition. Let’s Face Facts was recorded by the Masqueraders and yet again Goldwax chose a superb and fitting song for James to perform.

  • Stars Of Spring EP-0

Various - Stars Of Spring EP (7 single/EP)

    15,00

The spotlight turns on the Spring label for the latest in Ace’s series of limited edition EPs from iconic US soul imprints. Spring ran from 1967 to the mid-80s and was highly successful. Ace have included megastar Millie Jackson, revisiting her second LP for the bouncy and irresistible Close My Eyes; a swinging, uptempo number that will now get its deserved dancehall spins on a DJ-friendly 7-inch. Millie had around 20 albums on the label while the Ray Godfrey-produced group Act I managed just the one. What a terrific LP it was, though, and again Ace are liberating one of its highlights, It’s The Same Old Story, on a conveniently sized disc for 45 collectors and top soul spinners to enjoy again. For soul fans, Garland Green’s emotive vocals are up there with the best and his Spring sessions with Brad Shapiro in 1973 produced the superb ballad Just What The Doctor Ordered, which until now has only featured on a 1990 Kent vinyl LP. Winfield Parker is another for the connoisseurs. Starvin’ was the follow-up to his only hit, a 1971 remake of S. O. S. Stop Her On Sight. Although musically its equal yet way more progressive, it was to be his final 45 on the illustrious label.

  • A Shot Of Rhythm`n`Blues 33 rpm EP-0

    Alexander Arthur - A Shot Of Rhythm`n`Blues 33 rpm EP (7 single/EP)

    8,00

Alabama born, country soul pioneer, Arthur Alexander is one of those singers and songwriters almost all the big names of the music that we love name as a big influence. Hit songs like ”Anna”, or ”You better move on” are great examples of a superb talent in composing as well as a highly distinctive melancholic singing voice.
Keeping the line of the EP’s we are releasing on the label, we feature here a few rare examples of Alexander’s uptempo songs, like his cover of Clyde McPhatter’s ”Lover please” or his own original version of ”A Shot of Rhythm and Blues”, as well as both sides of the pretty elusive 45 released by him under the name of June Alexander, two songs (”The girl that radiates that charm” and ”Sally Sue Brown”) that already showcase all the ingredients that would make Arthur Alexander the favourite that he has always been.

    Enjoy these beautiful sides!

    Hawks Billy - O` Baby! EP (7 single/EP)

    15,00

Billy Hawks’ second album Heavy Soul is an organ-heavy mod R&B masterpiece. It included club classic O’Baby (I Believe I’m Losing You), as well as three other floor-fillers; You’ve Been A Bad Girl, Whip It On Me, and What More Can I Do?.

The beautifully packaged EP is designed in the London Records / Decca style and showcases the two known photographs of Billy. These were provided by the organ-playing singer’s brother Leroy in 2014. Until this point almost nothing was known about Billy. A native of Richmond, Virginia, he based himself in Philadelphia and his trio worked up and down the Eastern seaboard. He was discovered playing in one of the endless clubs and lounges that existed at the time and made his first album for Prestige, The New Genius Of The Blues, in 1966; Heavy Soul followed a year later. Produced by Cal Lampley at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, both You’ve Been A Bad Girl and What More Can I Do are appearing on 7- inch for the first time.

Wood Jack - Born To Wander / So Sad (7 single/EP)

    12,00

In May of 1966, the unknown singer Jack Wood recorded two songs at Great Lakes Studio in Sparta, Michigan. These unique, otherworldly songs ”Born to Wander” and ”So Sad” would be self-released by Wood on his own Lawrence Records imprint in an edition of 100 copies. Going nowhere and being quickly forgotten, it would take Wood ten years to pay back the $250 he borrowed for the entire endeavor. Fast-forward to the 21st century and the deepest of record collectors are intrinsically moved by the power behind Wood’s single, vacillating between Northern Soul, garage, big band and country music all within the same song.

An unexpected placement in a major ad campaign for Bacardi Rum was a major boon for the burgeoning awareness of these timeless songs.

  • Ace 40 - Birthday Boxset-0

    Various - Ace 40 – Birthday Boxset (7 single/EP)

    80,00

A celebration of our 40years in business: 1975-2015 represented by seven vinyl singles in a luxury box/book.

40 years on and, as the song says, we got to get right back where we started from. That was and still is the 7-inch vinyl 45rpm single. This traditional “album” contains seven 45s that could never fully represent the Ace story so far, but they touch on numerous aspects of what we have been doing all this time. There are unissued versions, highlights from our career, lost gems and an error corrected, but all truly terrific music. A small jukebox worth of recordings spanning the 20 years from which the bulk of Ace releases have been drawn. It is hard to believe only 20 years separate Etta James’ release for Modern from Joe Strummer’s first recording made for our Chiswick label, which in turn is now nearly 40 years old.

After our dalliance with pop and rock, which lasted until the early 80s and wasn’t without its highpoints, we shifted our attention to recording London’s garage and psychobilly bands in the wake of licensing the Cramps’ catalogue. But the blues, its more active little brother rhythm & blues, even more active grandchild soul and wayward second cousin who got the funk have always been a major strand in what we do. We heard some of that rock’n’roll music, liked it and put a lot of it out, alongside its sweeter pop counterpart and teenage rebel nephew 60s psych and garage that contributed to the backbone of the past 40 years of releases.

During that time, we have danced to many different tunes in many different styles. We jived, we twisted, then we shimmied (and shaked), glided elegantly across the northern soul dancefloor, pogoed and all the time shook a tail feather. These days it is more likely to be a soft shoe shuffle but the enthusiasm hasn’t dimmed. The dedicated team of Ace staff, engineers and consultants are still turning out a regular flow of great-sounding, handsomely packaged, articulately annotated CDs, with the odd LP and 45 thrown in for good measure. You can even download a lot of it, but unfortunately without the pretty pictures and sweet words as yet.

They say the future is online and they may be right, but nothing can match that warm fuzzy feeling the whiff of wax brings.

  • The Stars Of Money EP-0

Various - The Stars Of Money EP (7 single/EP)

    15,00

This entry in our limited edition EP series contains four fine tracks from Money, a label famous for fabulous Los Angelessoul. Money’s biggest star was Bettye Swann, who scored an R&B hit with her debut 45, ‘Don’t Wait Too Long’. The follow-up, ‘The Man That Said No’, sold less well, despite Bettye appearing on the TV show Shindig to plug it. Its resulting scarcity has now put the original 45 into the three-figure bracket. The label’s most prolific male artist was the talented Bobby Angelle, whose stage show was reputedly a riot. Arranger Arthur Wright’s worked up some urgent instrumentation for Bobby’s Northern Soul favourite ‘Too Much For You’, and recycled the backing track for ‘I’ll Be A Soldier Boy’, which appears on vinyl for the first time here. The M&M’s & the Peanuts’ first single, ‘Lil’ Valley’, is a throwback to the doo wop days but with a bang up-to-date gang fight theme. Soul music became more sophisticated, particularly in production, by the early 70s when Delilah Moore’s ‘I’ll Just Walk Away’ was issued. Despite its sad motif, the record has a feel-good factor.
