  • Penn Dan / Purify Bobby - The Inside Track On Bobby Purify (CD)

    18,00

The Inside Track on Bobby Purify traces the arc of one of Dan Penn’s recording projects from his original blueprint to its ultimate commercial release providing the listener with a unique behind-the-scenes experience of the whole process of songwriting and production from Dan’s side of the desk – This CD package contains a sixteen-page booklet featuring photographs and interviews with Dan about the recordings.Inspired by Solomon Burke’s soul-deep interpretation of Don’t Give Up On Me in 2002, Dan Penn reunited with his co-writers of the Grammy Award-winning song for a new project. He instinctively knew that team had more great songs in the same vein ready to be mined, but to get them dug out, they needed to dedicate some time to head down south for some quality writing and equally good eating. The demos he recorded during these songwriting sessions with his collaborators Carson Whitsett and Bucky Lindsey are a joy to hear as they feature Dan’s voice at its absolute, soulful best.Normally, these private tapes would not be made commercially available, but when they are heard alongside the ultimate versions that he produced by Bobby Purify, the vision of Dan Penn the producer is self- evident. Dan had identifed Bobby as the ideal singer for this next production having been reintroduced to him after a gap of some twenty years. Back home in his Nashville studio in 2004, Penn cut ten new tracks based on the demos featuring what Jerry Wexler referred to as € Bobby Purify’s glorious, God-given voice € . Dan called on fellow southernsoul session stars Carson Whitsett, Spooner Oldham, Reggie Young, Jimmie Johnson, David Hood and Wayne Jackson to lay down the perfect foundation for what became Bobby Purify’s 2005 album – Better To Have It. Bobby had gone totally blind a few years before these Nashville recording sessions and sadly lacked the confdence to go out on tour with this great studio band as intended. Consequently, the album was deleted and has been unavailable.

Sledge sang all of his songs that way, delivering them in a powerful rush where he quickly changed from soulful belting to quavering, tearful pleas. It was a voice that made him one of the key figures of deep Southern soul.

  • Various - Loma Northern Soul – Classics & Revelations 1964-1968 (CD)

    20,00

If you want to know about the quality of a label’s output, look at the backroom staff as well as the artists. This CD features work from the following arrangers and producers: NYC – Garry Sherman, Richard Tee, Van McCoy, Robert Banks,
George Kerr, Jerry Ragovoy, Don Costa, Sammy Lowe & Jesse Herring. L A – Gene Page, James Carmichael, Jerry Long, Len Jewell Smith,
Marc Gordon, Hooven & Winn and Billy Revis. Songwriters: Willie Hutchison, Lorraine Ellison & Sam Bell, Mort Shuman & Jerry
Ragovoy, Randy Newman, Van McCoy and Sammy Turner.
The compilation is a mix of the loved and cherished sides as played on the Northern Soul scene from the early 70s onwards, to brand new master tape finds that will give this ageing cultural movement a timely shot in the arm for the ‘20s and beyond.
The Marvellos open with ‘It’s Your Love That I Need’, a 1966 Willie Hutch song that has only just been unearthed and is setting dancefloors alight with its mid-60s soul perfection. Their classic ‘Something’s Burnin’’ is here along with a recent gem, ‘I Need You’ that is also digitally presented for the first time too.
The equally accomplished and respected Invincibles have a solid three dance tracks – none of which were issued at the time. ‘Heartstrings’ is the catchy dancer destined to go big, while ‘Please Be True’ is for connoisseurs of the Impressions’ vocalising style. ‘Got A Thing Goin’’ however is a manic stomper for super-fit dancers and acrobats only – reminiscent of Little Joe Cook’s ‘I’m Falling In Love With You Baby’.
Philly’s Ben Aiken made his Northern name with the irrepressible ‘Satisfied’ when we were teenagers. Two unreleased nuggets ‘That’s All I Gotta Do’ and ‘If You Should See Her’ will keep him known and revered through our later years. Carl Hall’s evergreen ‘Mean It Baby’ is augmented by his ‘Like I Told You’ – a real grower. The girls join in with the legendary Linda Jones’ ‘My Heart Needs A Break’ opus, Delilah Kennebreuw’s Spectoresque collector’s favourite ‘Bright Lights’ and the girly stomper that is ‘See The Silvery Moon’ by the Apollas – poptastic.
Early-scene mod sounds are provided by the mysterious Clyde & The Blue Jays who tell us how to do ‘The Big Jerk’, the Olympics revert to the R&B of their earlier career with ‘I Finally Got A Break’ before their Mirwood soul makeover. Billy Storm tears it up with ‘Baby Don’t Look Down’ an early song from the man who would give us the soundtrack to Toy Story – Randy Newman. The Enchanters’ ‘Just A Little Longer’ is a mid-60s Drifters’ soundalike, fresh from the tape reel.
The Soul Shakers’ ‘I’m Getting Weaker’, Kell Osborne’s ‘You Can’t Outsmart A Woman’ and Larry Laster’s ‘Go For Yourself’ are accepted as the building blocks of the Northern Soul scene and still sound wonderful. Sleepers include Bobby Freeman’s magnificent ‘Lies’, Tony Amarro & The Chariots’ ‘Runnin’ Around’ and the dynamic production of Charles Thomas’ ‘The Man With The Golden Touch’.
With such high-quality sides to choose from, we have treated ourselves to two “enders” – Bobby Reed’s beautiful ‘I’ll Find A Way’ one of Van McCoy’s very best and Tommy Starr’s melancholic ‘Better Think Of What You’re Losing’.

  • Strong Barrett / Various - Barrett Strong and The Roots of Detroit Soul (CD)

    13,00

The latest volume in Jasmine’s intense reissue programme of early Detroit Soul, this unique compilation is built around the seven singles which BARRETT STRONG recorded for Tamla and Atco, between 1959 and 1962.

Strong was one of Tamla’s earliest hitmakers, famously recording the original version of ’Money’, the crossover R&B/Pop classic which would later be revived by Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones, among many more.

Also featured are six minor Tamla/Motown/Miracle artists CHICO LEVERETT (who was also a member of The Satintones), HERMAN GRIFFIN, SINGIN’ SAMMY WARD (who charted briefly with ’Who’s The Fool’), HERMAN LUMPKIN, GINO PARKS and ANDRE WILLIAMS (who went on to become an important producer), each of whom cut only a few sides for Berry Gordy’s labels.

Like most compilations of early Tamla/Motown material this is a superlative body of work, and you wonder why more of these sides failed to become hits.

  • Booker James - Behind The Iron Curtain plus… (5CD deluxe pack) (CD)

    90,00

James Booker – Behind The Iron Curtain plus… 5 CD deluxe pack set with 60 page booklet in 10inch format! Limited Edition.

From Jelly Roll Morton to Jon Batiste, the city of New Orleans has produced more great piano players than any other place on earth. But James Carroll Booker III may very well have been the greatest of them all. When he died in 1983 at the age of 43 after years of health problems and drug abuse, only four Booker albums had been released, and his fans have been searching for additional recordings that showcase his genius ever since. While virtually unknown in the US, Booker had a strong following in Germany and neighboring countries, where he played more than 100 shows between 1976 and 1978. These were the years of his creative peak, and Booker always maintained that he played better there than he did anytime or anywhere else. But what exactly happened during those tours has long remained a mystery – until now. With its comprehensive new release ’Behind The Iron Curtain plus,’ RICHARD WEIZE ARCHIVES intends to tell, for the very first time, the full story of James Booker’s European adventures.

It includes three complete Booker shows on five CDs: East Berlin (December 1976), Lausanne (January 1977) and Leipzig (October 1977). Interestingly, at that time East Berlin and Leipzig were part of socialist East Germany, a country that no longer exists, and how Booker got there and why he played some of the best shows of his career behind the Iron Curtain, of all places, is a whole story unto itself. James Booker was a virtuoso technician who combined influences as diverse as Ludwig van Beethoven and Ray Charles, Erroll Garner and Fats Domino, Frédéric Chopin and Professor Longhair into a unique style of New Orleans R&B piano that hasn’t been duplicated to this day. Plus he also sang with a bluesy, soulful voice full of anguish and emotion. No other posthumous Booker release has done full justice to his genius and we hope that ’Behind The Iron Curtain plus…’ will lead to a new appraisal of one of American music’s most gifted and overlooked originals. • Franklin Aretha - The Complete Releases 1956-62 (2CD) (CD)

    15,00

or several decades Aretha Franklin has enjoyed the accolade of being called “The Queen Of Soul”, a position that was cemented by her landmark 1967 pop and R&B No. 1 “Respect”. However, her career as a recording artist was a decade old by that time, having honed her style and singing gospel, jazz and blues- influenced material in her late teens. This great value 48-track collection brings together all of her recordings which were released through to 1962, by which time she had established a reputation as a distinctive, soulful and dynamic performer and had made early inroads in both the R&B and pop charts. It comprises her debut recordings as a gospel artist on the 10” LP “Songs Of Faith”, for Joe Von Battle’s JVB label, made when she was just 14 years old, and then all her singles for Columbia, most of which came from her three albums for the label “Aretha Franklin With The Ray Bryant Combo”, “The Electrifying Aretha Franklin” and “The Tender, The Moving, The Swinging Aretha Franklin”, the complete content of which is also included, along with a track from a multi-artist Christmas compilation. It’s a thorough showcase for her talent and style in the early years of her career.

  • Various - Detroit Harmonisers – Early 60s Soul Groups in the Motor City (CD)

    13,00

This unique compilation presents a collection of vintage, highly-collectable early Motown recordings, featuring everything recorded for the company by a trio of their legendary male vocal groups, between 1959-62.

THE CONTOURS became one of Motown’s first major groups, on the back of their million-selling, chart-topping ’Do You Love Me’, a song which would quickly evolve into a Pop, R&B and Soul standard, and its raucous follow-up, ’Shake Sherry’, both in 1962.

THE SATINTONES famously cut ’Motor City’ in 1959, a prophetically-titled early tribute to Detroit, and ’Tomorrow And Always’, a cheeky answer disc to The Shirelles’ ’Will You Love Me Tomorrow’, in 1961.

THE VALADIERS bubbled under the Top 100 in 1961 with the mildly controversial ’Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam)’, a song which another Motown group, The Monitors, would successfully revive in 1966, as the draft for the Vietnam War escalated.

    15,00

50 original hits & rarities that defined the start of the northern soul era.

This collection features recordings made between 1956 and 1962 and represent the various changes that the scene went through over the years as far as the sound and tempo of records that could fill the floors.

50 excellent tracks ranging from H. B. Barnum’s ’It Hurts Too Much to Cry’, to Charles Sheffield’s Louisiana jukebox hit ’It’s Your Voodoo Working’ to Ruth Brown’s 1956 hit ’Sweet Baby of Mine’ then to mid-tempo doo wop from The Franciscans’ ’Walk to the Bottom of the Sea’ plus many more superb tracks.

Today the scene is just as vibrant as it ever was and collections like this one show how the music that fuelled the scene really started. These are truly the sounds that started an era.

  • Sunny And the Sunliners - Mr. Brown Eyed Soul Vol.2 (CD)

    20,00

Sunny Ozuna is a living legend and a man worthy of praise on many levels. In the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than Sunny is. He became a star right out of high school in the late ’50s and hasn’t looked back in the seven decades since. Among countless other honors and notable achievements, Sunny was the first Latino artist to appear on Dick Clark’s ”American Bandstand” (in 1963). He penned ”Smile Now, Cry Later,” a hit for him and The Sunliners, which along with the theater masks that grace the album’s cover, became staples in the Chicano Soul and Lowrider Soul cultures.

We have been fans of Sunny & The Sunliners’ music for a long time. We first got in touch with Sunny to try to reissue some of his records in 2013 but we didn’t sign a deal until 2015. It took a trip to San Antonio and then two years of steady phone calls before they decided ”if you have been chasing us for this long, you must be serious.” With Sunny’s blessing we started getting everything mastered, scanned, and planned. First we released 2017’s Mr Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1 compilation that put rare 7″ sides next to some of his biggest hits and mixed in some choice album cuts for good measure. In the wake of that, we released three of Sunny’s full lengths with their original track lists and art: Smile Now, Cry Later, Little Brown Eyed Soul, and The Missing Link – all of which were Record Store Day releases that raised money for the victims of 2017’s Hurricane Harvey. For the 7″ collectors, we reissued five 45s, making some very hard to come by sides widely available again and pressing some tunes on the format for the first time. In 2020, as an homage to Sunny, we released Dear Sunny… a compilation of Big Crown artists covering Sunny & The Sunliners songs. Through all of this we were able to do what we set out to do: get Sunny’s music to a new audience of people and make it all accessible and available again to his existing fanbase. Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His music and the music that it directly influenced are seeing a resurgence in popularity in the last few years. With any luck at all, our efforts played some small part in that, and on that note, we present Mr Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 2 – another compilation curated by us, where we dig a little deeper into Sunny’s catalog and pull some lesser known gems that hold court with his hits. Hats off again to Mr Brown Eyed Soul himself, San Antonio’s own, Sunny Ozuna, we are sure you will enjoy the music.

  • Various - Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol. 6 (CD)

    18,00

2022 collection. This volume in our acclaimed Masterpieces Of Modern Soul series is as strong as ever and drips with brand new, old recordings. An amazing 12 tracks are previously unheard and a further two are very different versions of already popular numbers. Some rare-soul household names have new material featured on here. Ronnie McNeir hits a wicked dance groove with ’Let’s Make A Move’ and Dee Ervin offers a superbly soulful ’You Make Me Happy’ – sure to become a modern classic. We’ve drifted into the late 70s / early 80s disco sound with numbers found on tape that were just crying out to be heard. Joe Simon cut the unknown group Cynic on ’I Want You’ at Spring early in 1982. Detroit’s Exportations very catchy ’Second Time Around’ and the equally fast, funky and fantastic ’Have A Good Time’ by Atlanta’s Maggabrain were laid down in the late 70s as was Fox Fire’s ’Don’t Play Me Cheap’. The early 80s is the likely era for Melanie Burke’s ’I Can’t Turn You Down’ – which, like the McNeir and Hodges James & Smith offerings, were Mickey Stevenson productions made in L A. We have lifted three great LP-only tracks from 1975 Fantasy albums by Janice, Betty Everett and Three Pieces: they fit so well into the compilation. Margie Joseph singing a Willie Tee song called ’Nobody’ is virtually guaranteed to be great music. It is still for sale at a reasonable price – as opposed to the arm and a leg you’ll need to offer for ’You Done Let The Daylight Catch You’ by Second Ressurection. We found a quite different vocal take for Phillip Mitchell’s ’I’ll See You In Hell First’ and a much longer version of Dave Hamilton’s ’Who’ as recorded by the unknown Jackie Dee – it was remixed from the master tape. Another Dave Hamilton song ’Must Have Had Company’ by Elayne Starr has only appeared on one of the later Dave Hamilton CDs – well worthy of a rewind for modern soul movers. The highly talented west coast producer George Semper gives us ’Doo Doop Dee Deep Doot Doo’ which owes a lot to the Sly Stone sound of the time and is similarly enthralling. Finally, we have yet another top quality, unheard 70s soul recording from Joe Hinton who had many tracks abandoned and left in the vault when Atlanta’s GRC records crashed due to the nefarious behavior of it’s owner

  • Various - Wrap It Up: Isaac Hayes & David Porter Songbook (CD)

    20,00

Their partnership lasted barely four years and just over 50 songs – but between 1965 and 1969 Isaac Hayes and David Porter penned some of soul’s most enduring anthems of their era, many of which are still being regularly performed and recorded to this day. Ace are delighted to welcome them into our ever-popular Songwriter Series this month with ”Wrap It Up”, a fantastic collection featuring almost half of the total number of songs they wrote together in versions you would expect, and versions you wouldn’t. Hayes and Porter wrote for almost every major act on the Stax roster, but the commercial appeal of their songs gave them appeal to artists operating outside the perimeters of soul music. ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, the (Count) Bishops and Charlie Rich are just some of the fine turns you will find here essaying Hayes and Porter copyrights alongside Stax stalwarts such as Johnnie Taylor, Mable John, the Emotions, the Soul Children, Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, and, of course, Sam and Dave whose recordings of their songs were what established Hayes and Porter as a peerless songwriting force in the first place. As lovingly curated and expertly annotated as you would expect any Ace project in the Songwriter Series to be, ”Wrap It Up” is another valuable piece in the great American songwriting jigsaw, and very much a collection where the songs that were not necessarily big hits are easily on a par with those that were. It is a fitting audio tribute to two men who have between them won just about every major award going, from Grammys to election to the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

  • Peebles Ann & The Hi Rhythm Section - Live In Memphis (CD)

    18,00

    Live archive release.

This live performance by soul queen Ann Peebles features backing by many of the same musicians with whom she recorded the jewels of her catalog. The album, produced by David Less, is the only known live recording of Peebles and Hi Rhythm, the ensemble numbering a total of nine players behind Peebles as she offered her best known repertoire on the night of February 7, 1992 on a program billed An Evening of Classic Soul. Ann Peebles & the Hi Rhythm Section Live in Memphis includes such hits as ”Part Time Love, ” ”Straight From The Heart, ” ”(You Keep Me) Hangin’ On, ” ”I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” and her pop crossover hit ”I Can’t Stand The Rain, ” among others.

  • Bell William - Never Like This Before – the Complete Blue Stax Singles 1961-1968 (CD)

    20,00

Iconic veteran Southern soul man William Bell has been in the business of making records for 66 years, and was with Memphis’ fabled Stax label for virtually its entire 15-year existence (1960-1975). In that time, he composed and recorded many songs that are rightly regarded as classics, from his Stax debut ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ to the classic blues song ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’ to his hit duet with Judy Clay, ‘Private Number’.
Ace Records has represented William’s Stax catalogue in the UK for longer than the label originally existed, and we have issued a number of CDs over the years, including original albums and “Best Of” packages, but this month sees the release of the first of two CD sets that will, between them, anthologise the A and B-sides all of William’s solo singles for Stax.
“Never Like This Before” covers the first seven years of William’s Stax catalogue, and rounds up all 14 of the singles that came out on Stax’s original blue label design with the ‘Stack Of Records’ logo. Among the classics featured are the aforementioned ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’, William’s holiday perennial ‘Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday’ and his heartfelt salute to his recently-deceased Stax labelmate Otis Redding, ‘A Tribute To A King’ – to name but a few.
William is, of course, backed on all tracks by members of the legendary Stax ‘house band’ Booker T & the MGs and the Memphis Horns.
Arranged in sequence of release and with a booklet featuring extensive annotation and illustration, “Never Like This Before” lives up to its title and offers quality Southern soul in a package worthy of the man who, at the age of 82, is still singing many of these songs in live shows, and singing them as well as he ever did!

  • Various - Rockin Soul Party Vol. 4 (CD)

    15,00

The metamorphism of sounds featured in Let’s Throw A Rockin’ Soul Party Volume 04 (KM-CD-133) is derived from rhythm & blues music with a “New Breed” influence from the up and coming stars of the genre and they are taken from the years 1957 through to 1963.

  • Springfield Dusty - Dusty Sings Soul (CD)

    18,00

From the very start of her solo career, it was Dusty Springfield’s intention to make records in the style of the black American artists that she admired, both professionally and personally. She recorded her version of a soul song at her first solo session and was still recording soul songs on all of her albums, singles and EPs throughout the ’60s and into the ’70s. Dusty Sings Soul is a long overdue and carefully curated collection of recordings from Dusty’s ’60s singles and albums, designed to demonstrate that she was not only the UK’s finest female singer but also it’s finest soul singer of her era and, for many, of all time. There is no shortage of Dusty compilations out there, but this is the first one to exclusively concentrate on this particular side of her far-reaching work. These are not ’covers’, in that Dusty never directly covered any record until the original had run it’s course. Dusty simply recorded songs that she loved herself, and that she hoped her fans would love. Dusty was a big fan of many of the artists whose songs she recorded and helped to raise their profile in the UK through her interpretations of their work. For soul fans who love Dusty but who only want to hear her singing soul, rather than the show tunes and/or pop ballads that she was equally at home with, this will be every bit as essential as her Dusty In Memphis album and the records she made in Philadelphia at the very end of the ’60s with Gamble & Huff. The booklet is generously illustrated and copiously annotated.

  • Drifters - We Gotta Sing – The Soul Years 1962-1971 (3CD Boxset)

    30,00

    • Collection of 76 recordings by The Drifters featuring all of their chart hits of the period 1962 to 1971; including mono/stereo alternate takes of titles and five unissued songs only ever available on long deleted CDs released in 1996

    • With two long-thought lost recordings, never originally released, ‘I Dig Your Act’ and ‘You And Me Together Forever’ making their world-wide debut on this 3 CD set.

    • Compiled, annotated and produced for re-issue by Bob Fisher with assistance from one of the leading experts on Drifter’s history, Pete Burns. Designed by Michael Robson and mastered by Simon Murphy this is the definitive collection of one of The Drifters’ greatest eras – ‘The Soul Years’

The Drifters have always been one of the most beloved of all African American male vocal groups. This 3CD set is devoted to what we have called for simplification purposes, ‘The Soul Years’. It presents, in chronological order, all of the recording sessions they undertook for Atlantic Records between June 28th 1962 and January 5th 1971.

The accompanying booklet lists discographical information including the group line-up, the writers of the songs, the location and date of the recording sessions, and if known, the producer and arranger of the tracks. Plus, all of their UK and US chart positions

The Drifters were originally formed in 1953 by Clyde McPhatter, one of the most influential of ‘50s R&B vocalists. By 1958 the group had been replaced by another group by their manager and this group featured Ben E King as lead singer for a short time. Lead singers on the ‘Soul Years’ sessions are mainly Rudy Lewis or Johnny Moore.

By 1962 the group moved on from their early ‘50s R&B roots and late ‘50s symphonic pop sounds to embrace the coming of Soul music. Their journey through this genre was helped by renowned songwriters like Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Ellie Greenwich, Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman, Burt Bacharach, Hal David, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and producers like Bert Berns, Jerry Wexler and Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller.

  • Redding Otis - Respect: Very Best Of (2CD) (CD)

    15,00

This collection of 40 tracks from the singer’s too-short career serves as both a more-than-complete overview of his career and a great hits collection.

This t also charts Redding’s evolution as he moved from his beginnings as a Little Richard-like belter to an accomplished performer who later found his own voice on classic recordings like ’I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)’, ’Try a Little Tenderness’ and ’(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay’. He may have died young, but Otis had an old soul. Warner.

  • Various - Stop The War: Vietnam Through The Eyes Of Black America 1965-1974 (CD)

    18,00

This month sees the release of the last in Kent’s trilogy spotlighting black America’s involvement in the Vietnam war. Presented in loosely chronological sequence, Stop The War contains many highly significant musical statements on various aspects of the conflict, from shipping out to coming home. Even though the Vietnam war has been over for almost half a century it’s still possible, through these songs, to feel the frustration, anger and sadness that many Americans felt towards a conflict that lasted far too long and claimed far too many lives on both sides. Featured artists include major names such as Marvin Gaye, the Impressions, Dionne Warwick, William Bell, and the Staple Singers alongside lesser known but equally worthy contributors including Michael Lizzmore, the Pace Setters, Charles Smith & Jeff Cooper and Artie Golden, all of whom have something important to add to the story. The vast majority of these tracks have not previously appeared on Kent, and several make their CD debut here. Annotated and illustrated as copiously as you would expect a prestige Kent project to be, ”Stop The War” is a fitting and forthright finale to a trilogy that has been extremely gratifying to bring you. We are confident that demand and acclaim for this one will be as strong as it was for the previous two volumes.

  • King Elizabeth - Living In The Last Days (CD)

Memphis soul gospel queen Elizabeth King recorded her first single in 1970, and if all had gone as planned, she would have made her first album a few years later. Instead, it took another half century, but Living In The Last Days, the latest sacred soul long player from Memphis’s Bible and Tire imprint, captures King at the height of her powers, with the intervening decades only serving to stoke the flames of one of the most memorable voices in modern gospel music. Living In The Last Days is a triumph from the very first intimate vocal notes of the arresting opening track, ”No Ways Tired,” to the similarly moving closer, ”You’ve Got To Move,” dual studies in intensity that each build to a burning climax, bookending a searing selection of songs burnished by the down-home grooves of the Sacred Soul Sound Section. Additionally, the Sensational Barnes Brothers are on board for harmony vocals as are King’s old D-Vine Spirituals label mates the Vaughn Sisters and the D-Vine Spiritualettes.

  • Various - Everybody Makes A Mistake: Stax Southern Soul Vol 2 (CD)

    18,00

Stax Records in Memphis was one of the centres of southern soul, yet due to it’s many hits and big city location, this often gets forgotten. We redressed that balance with the release of ”Nobody Wins: Stax Southern Soul” but there was so much more to play that we’re back with 20 more tracks that capture the deep emotion and soulful feel of the Memphis behemoth. First up we have found a bunch of previously unreleased tracks. There are two by Eddie Floyd, including his own version of ’Everybody Makes A Mistake’, first released by Otis Redding on ”The Soul Album”; and there’s a stormer called ’Standing In The Safety Zone’ by the Soul Children. We also have alternate takes of originally unreleased tracks by Ollie & the Nightingales and William Bell and have gathered up rare tracks that appeared as bonus tracks on CDs by Jimmy Hughes, Mavis Staples, Shirley Brown, the Newcomers, David Porter, Chuck Brooks and Veda Brown. Of those that saw release at the time, we have obscure B-sides by Eddie Giles, Israel Tolbert and Lee Sain. Singles from Randy Brown, Frederick Knight and the Nightingales are as good as anything the label released, and Isaac Hayes is present with his take on the Banks & Hampton single ’I’m Gonna Have To Tell Her’, one of the great southern soul songs. Packaged with in-depth sleeve notes and extensive illustrations.

  • Turner Ike & Tina - Come Together / ’Nuff Said (CD)

    18,00

Two early 1970s albums from Ike and Tina. Whilst their live shows packed them in, the duo found it hard to rekindle the recorded success of ’River Deep, Mountain High’. However, these two albums paved the way for ’Nutbush City Limits’ in 1973 with ’Proud Mary’ being a US Top 5 single. Digitally remastered and slipcase. With extensive new notes
