  • Movie - Last Of The The Mississippi Jukes (DVD + Bonus soundtrack CD) (DVD)

    20,00

Robert Mugge’s 2003 music documentary, LAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI JUKES, explores the fading traditions of rural Mississippi juke joints. The blues was first played by itinerant musicians in juke joints on the edge of cotton plantations, later migrating into so-called urban lounges, and regional musicians still practice their craft and entertain their fans in both, as well as in modern blues clubs and casino lounges. The film focuses, in particular, on two well-known Mississippi venues: Jimmy King’s legendary Subway Lounge which, for three decades, operated in the basement of the historic, black-owned Summers Hotel in Jackson, MS; and actor Morgan Freeman’s and attorney Bill Luckett’s Ground Zero Blues Club, a contemporary blues venue in Clarksdale, MS that incorporates the design elements, menu, and spirit of a traditional juke. The story of Mississippi jukes is told by blues historians Dick Waterman and Steve Cheseborough, by the club owners, by local politicians, and by participating musicians. The musicians also demonstrate styles of blues that originated in the Mississippi Delta and elsewhere around the state. For instance, performing at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale are Alvin Youngblood Hart with Sam Carr and Anthony Sherrod. Performing at the Subway Lounge in Jackson are Bobby Rush, Chris Thomas King, Vasti Jackson, Patrice Moncell, Eddie Cotton, Greg ”Fingers” Taylor, Lucille, Abdul Rasheed, Levon Lindsey, J.T. Watkins, Dennis Fountain, Pat Brown, George Jackson, Steve Cheseborough, Casey Phillips, Jimmy King, David Hughes, Virgil Brawley, and the Subway’s two alternating house bands: the House Rockers and the King Edward Blues Band. LAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI JUKES looks at the buildings, the landscapes, and the communities where the blues began, and it examines how original blues traditions have evolved over time, carried into a new century by committed musicians and club owners, both in Mississippi and around the world.

  • Jay Willie Blues Band - Hell On Wheels (CD)

    DESCRIPTION

I love this record and the musicians who support the Jay Willie Blues Band. The band has been performing together for over a decade and includes some of New England’s most impressive performers. Vocalist Malorie Leogrande is a performing five-octave range vocalist who holds a MALS degree in Arts and Humanities from Wesleyan University. Drummer Bobby T Torello has been the driving force of bands featuring Michael Bolton, Jefferson Starship’s Grace Slick and the iconic bluesman Johnny Winter. He’s toured the globe sharing the stage with Aerosmith, Foreigner and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Recently I had the honor of performing with Bobby and former Winter bassist Jon Paris at BB Kings Club in New York City to pay a special tribute to the late Johnny Winter’s 72th birthday celebration. Bassist Steve Clarke has performed with two-time Grammy nominee Sherry Winston, The Coasters, The Drifters, Mary Wells, Sam & Dave, toured Europe with trumpeter Laco Deczi’s & Celula New York band and the Chris Tofield Blues Band. Vocalist and Guitarist Bob Callahan has shared the stage with prominent musicians including James Cotton, Matt Murphy, Colin Tilton, Andy Powell, and James Montgomery. Saxophonist Teddy Yakush can be seen regularly with many local bands performing varied genres of music. This is the fourth consecutive Jay Willie Blues Band album which features blues harmonica ace Jason Ricci. Jason has had some great career successes since our ZOHO previous release ”Johnny’s’ Juke Joint” (ZOHO ZM 201510). Most notably, Jason contributed to the Johnny Winter 2015 Grammy-winning Best Blues Album ”Step Back”. Jason also performed at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band where he gave a slaying performance of ”Born In Chicago” along with Tom Morello on guitar and Zac Brown on vocals.

  • Various - Knoxville Sessions 1929 – 1930, Knox County Stomp (4-CD Deluxe Box Set) (CD)

    99,00

4-CD boxed set (LP-size) with 156-page hardcover book, 102 tracks. Total playing time approx. 300 minutes.

    •    With this set, Bear Family Records completes the map of commercial recording in East Tennessee in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
    •    ‘The Bristol Sessions, 1927–1928: The Big Bang Of Country Music’ documented epoch-making sessions by Victor Records that launched the careers of Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family, while
    •    ‘The Johnson City Sessions, 1928–1929: Can You Sing Or Play Old-Time Music?’ focused on Columbia Records’ similar search for early country music talent in Appalachia, sessions that yielded many other seminal recordings.

The Knoxville Sessions, 1929–1930: Knox County Stomp features the music made at two sessions conducted by Brunswick Records at downtown St. James Hotel—music remarkable both for its variety and for the rarity of the records that preserved it.

Whereas the recordings made in Bristol and Johnson City were almost exclusively of old-time country and gospel music, the Knoxville sessions captured a more diverse gathering of Appalachian voices and sounds. Amidst old-time stringbands like the Tennessee Ramblers, the Southern Moonlight Entertainers, and the Smoky Mountain Ramblers, we also hear the majestic African American blues and gospel singer Leola Manning, the hot dance music of Maynard Baird & His Southern Serenaders, the virtuoso string ragtime of Howard Armstrong and the Tennessee Chocolate Drops, sacred songs by white and African American quartettes, songsters such as Will Bennett and Haskell Wolfenbarger, a unique recorded playlet about the Hatfield–McCoy feud—and even an address by the businessman whose enterprise brought Brunswick Records to Knoxville, Colonel J. G. Sterchi, president of the famous Sterchi Bros. furniture store chain.

The Knoxville Sessions, 1929–1930: Knox County Stomp gathers together, for the first time, all the issued recordings made at the St. James Hotel, remastered from the original 78s—some of them so elusive that only single copies are known to exist. These 102 fascinating performances, on four CDs, are accompanied by a 156-page, LP-sized hardcover book containing essays on the history of Knoxville, the background to the sessions, and the individual artists, much of the material based on new research. The book is also filled with scores of rare photographs, many previously unpublished, as well as complete song lyrics and a detailed discography with 250 illustrations.
