  • Specter Dave - Message in Blue (CD)

This is a really good record by Chicago-based guitarist Dave Spector, you can clearly hear his influences – Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Freddy King – combined with those of his mentor Steve Freund and also his jazz influences from people like Kenny Burrell. As with Dave’s other records there are plenty of interesting instrumentals like opener ”New West side stroll”, the title track ”Message in blue”, the funky ”Funkified outta space”, ”Jefferson stomp” where he is joined by harmonica player Bob Corritore and the Latin jazz of ”Spectifyin’ samba”. Dave is also joined by Brother John Katke on vocals for great blues like Dave’s own ”Chicago style” which name checks Chicago blues legends and also Freddy King’s ”Same old blues”. He is also joined by soul legend Otis Clay for two great soul workouts ”Got to find a way” and the Falcons’ classic ”I found a love” as well as smouldering version of Bobby Bland’s soul blues ”This Time I’m Gone for Good”. This album is a must for aspiring guitarists with Dave’s inspiring mixture of tasteful blues and jazz guitar styles and for the rest of us it provides an interesting varied record, with the supporting band also playing their part in making this a real success.
