Spastiks - Sewer Surfing (Limited Yellow) (LP)
€20,00Well they finally did it. They’ve reached their ultimate goal. They’ve climbed to the highest rung of the ladder in the tights of psychobilly. That’s right readers….grab those horns and sound the fanfare! The Spastiks are, at last, getting a full album review by me! ………….Hello? Is this thing on? Tough crowd. Well feck off then.
FINE!They’ve finally released their début platter (which, incidentally comes on black AND limited edition yellow vinyl…110 pieces…hand numbered…AND CD!) on everyone’s favourite label, Crazy Love Records, owned by everyone’s favourite German, Gorgeous Guido Neumann. Look at him there girls, isn’t he only gorgeous? So, 10 ditties of reverb drenched psychobilly with oodles of twang and lyrics that the boys over at Troma Entertainment would be proud/jealous of. The shlockabilly lyrics are made more threatening by the minacious rhythms of the guitar and ballsy bass slapping. You can hear quite clearly that the boys are very much influenced by the first wave of psychobilly. It’s pure…oh, I better not say that….it’s authentic psychobilly! The boys have been arsing about in loads of bands over the years but they all seemed to just fizzle out. Not so this time around. The Spastiks continue to go from strength to strength and are gaining a worldwide audience. European as well as their native US festival promoters have began to sit up and take notice of this trio. This fine release should see them gain even more well deserved acclaim. Sexily packaged too I might add with some fine artwork by the legendary Oscar Hertin (not quite as legendary as me mind). If straight-up no frills psychobilly with lashings of rockabilly rhythm is your bag (it’s mine) then make that purchase! Upon arrival of your purchase, gently tease your finger in to the hole (if CD) or carefully hold the rim (if LP) and place your purchase on the relevant aural pleasure device….and don’t forget that kitchen roll lads (I recommend Plenty) as you’ll get so excited that pant-splash may occur.

August 10, 1920 was a crucial day for the future of the blues. That’s when Mamie Smith recorded her groundbreaking Crazy Blues for OKeh Records. Her glamorous approach to the music was solidly based in the vaudeville tradition, the accompaniment dominated by jazzy horns and flowery piano. The next big trend to emerge a little later in the decade revolved around blues guitarists, virtually all of them originally hailing from the rural South, their approach closely related to field hollers and work songs. Many were veritable virtuosos on their instruments. Lonnie Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Blake, and Skip James mapped out the guitar-dominated long-term future of the idiom with every 78 they released. These giants made their nimble fretwork heard over the cacophonous din inside the rowdy juke joints where they plied their trade by fretting their instruments with a slide or bottleneck. They achieved a fluid, crying sound on their acoustic axes, or pounded the hell out of their boxes with forceful chording. Performers popular enough to afford them acquired flashy steel-bodied National guitars that resonated louder than standard models. Blind Lemon Jefferson proved a sensation with rural blacks after he was discovered in Texas in 1925 or ’26, underscoring the commercial potential of downhome blues. The crushing poverty of the Depression brought the first boom of blues recording to an abrupt halt at the dawn of the 1930s. But the first two decades of recorded blues were a veritable goldmine of acoustic guitar brilliance. This collection offers a splendid cross-section of the very best.

Waters Muddy - The Lost Tapes – Recorded Live 1971 (LP)
€25,00It is so nice to listen to these sessions, recorded in 1971, at Washington and Oregon Universities, because they capture some of the essence of what truly made Muddy Waters so terrific; his live performances and kinship with his audience and fellow performers. Joined by greats George ”Harmonica” Smith, Pinetop Perkins on piano, Sammy Lawhorn and Pee Wee Madison on guitar, Calvin ”Fuzz” Jones on bass, and Willie ”Big Eyes” Smith on drums, Waters and co. rock the house on standards like ”Crawling Kingsnake” ”Hoochie Coochie Man,” and ”Got My Mojo Working,” through a bunch of his own tunes like ”Honey Bee,” ”Walking Thru The Park,” ”Trouble No More,” and ”She’s 19 Years Old.” My favorite cut has got to be ”Long Distance Call.” On this song, Muddy attacks his guitar neck with his slide, making it scream out hard and soulful blues.
