  • Movie (Feat. Jayne Mansfield) - The Fat Spy (1965) (DVD)

    13,00

Starring: Phyllis Diller, Jack E. Leonard, Brian Donlevy, Johnny Tillotson

    Genre: Musical Comedy

    Theatrical Date: 1965

    Run Time: 75 Minutes

    Flags: OK For Children

Joseph Cates (Who Killed Teddy Bear?) directed this insipid, widely reviled musical-comedy featuring heavyset comedian Jack E. Leonard in his leaden screen debut as twins Irving and Herman. The plot concerns some teenagers searching for treasure on a tropical island owned by a cosmetics tycoon (Brian Donlevy). His daughter (Jayne Mansfield, a year before her death) heaves her bosom a great deal and sings (badly). The best singing is done by lead teen Jordan Christopher, making his own screen debut with some promising numbers backed by the Wild Ones. There are a number of subplots involving spies, mermaids, and the legendary Fountain of Youth, as well as some amusing interplay between Leonard and Phyllis Diller to keep things interesting. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

  • Robbins Marty - Town Hall Party (DVD)

    25,00

Marty Robbins was a reticent television performer. His appearances during the early part of his career were few. So this is a treasure trove. Here are performances and interviews dating from the heart of Marty’s golden era. As an added bonus, we catch Tompall and the Glaser Brothers at the dawn of their long career. Marty was perhaps the most versatile singer in country music, and these long lost performances bear that out. He runs the gamut from Hawaiian songs to western ballads to teen pop to classic country. He does it all effortlessly, and he does it all superbly. If you weren’t lucky enough to be at the old Town Hall Party in February and October 1959, we’ll take you there!

We’ve heard so much about how great the Collins Kids were on the old Town Hall Party shows, but now there’s finally a chance for us all to see just how great they really were. Lorrie looked like an angel and sang like an angel. Larry was among the era’s most dynamic performers. He could run, jump, and duckwalk.all while playing a guitar that was almost as big as he was. This DVD really sets the record straight. The Collins Kids might have had no hits, but they were among the brightest stars in early rock ’n’ roll. Here, they’re mostly playing other peoples’ hits, blues hits, and pop classics, but they’re never outclassed by the originals.

  • Various - Good Rockin` Tonight-The Legacy Of Sun Records (DVD)

    18,00

”Sam Phillips’s Sun Records will forever be best known as the label for which Elvis Presley made his timeless first recordings. But Sun earned its legendary status by also recording any number of other blues and rock & roll greats, including Howlin’ Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. This 112-minute, 2001 documentary from PBS’s American Masters series features plenty of reminiscences by Sun old-timers (including the ever-voluble Phillips, who was not, apparently, universally loved by his artists) and some vintage film footage. But the best moments come when more contemporary artists–ranging from Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and Mark Knopfler to Live, Third Eye Blind, Ben Folds, and even Kid Rock–do their versions of Sun classics like ”Honey Don’t” and ”That’s All Right Mama.” Several of these performances can also be found on the excellent Good Rockin’ Tonight CD; the documentary is good, but if you have to make a choice, go with the CD. -Sam Graham

    Description

Historians may never agree about where and when rock ’n’ roll was born, but they do agree that an entrepreneur in the world of music named Sam Phillips began a revolution and spawned a legacy when he created Sun Records. This Memphis-based success story defined some of the most appealing roots of American popular culture with such seminal artists as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others, all reprised in this two-hour American Masters film with such performers as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and Live, many accompanied by Elvis’ original sidemen, Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. Highlights include a moving rendition of ”Lonely Weekends” with Jerry Lee Lewis and Matchbox Twenty, and an emotional reunion of old Mississippi Delta musicians. Songs: That’s All Right (Paul McCartney), Honey Don’t (Ben Folds Five), Rock n’ Roll Ruby (Mark Knopfler), I Walk the Line (Live), My Bucket’s Got a Hole in It (Robert Plant & Jimmy Page), Blue Suede Shoes (Johnny Hallyday), Who Will the Next Fool Be (Zucchero), Cry, Cry, Cry (Third Eye Blind), Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee (Malcolm Yelvington and Kid Rock), Lonely Weekend (Matchbox Twenty).”

  • Orbison Roy - The Anthology (DVD)

    25,00

For the first time The Roy Orbison Estate has endorsed, and co-operated with, the production and release of this unique DVD anthology.  This essential DVD weaves Orbison’s classic performances into the story of his incredible career.

Roy Orbison – The Anthology chronicles the man’s sparkling career illuminated by 14 magnificent Roy Orbison performances including Pretty Woman, Only The Lonely, Running Scared, Crying, It’s Over, Walk On, and You’ve Got It.  Famous artists such as Barry Gibb, Robert Plant, Bono, Dwight Yoakam, k.d. lang and many others introduce  and offer insights into his life, his work and his genius.

Orbison’s remarkable canon of work is tied to the entire life span of rock ’n’ roll, not merely to one decade.  He was born in Texas in 1936, moved to Nashville in the late 50s/60s where he penned Claudette for The Everly Brothers.  Then he scored eight Top 10 hits between 1960 and 1964 including Only The Lonely, Running Scared, Dream Baby, Crying, In Dreams, It’s Over and Oh Pretty Woman .

Roy Orbison was the only outstanding American artist to ride out the British Invasion.  He toured with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones , whilst suffering the personal tragedies of the deaths of his wife and two sons.  In the 70s he was reduced to playing at clubs until his reputation began to soar via covers of his earlier works by Linda Rondstat, Emmylou Harris and Don McLean. Finally, through his renaissance in the 80s with The Travelling Wilburys, his star shone strongly and brightly until his untimely death in 1988.

Comments by stars of rock ’n’ roll pay testimony to Roy Orbison.

His great gift was to turn the pain and bad luck that he experienced into ground breaking songs.”  Bono/U2

”In 1975 when I went into the studio to make Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector.  But most of all, I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison.”   Bruce Springsteen.

”Roy Orbison: The greatest singer in the world.” Elvis Presley.
