  • Hawkins Screaming Jay - My Little Shop Of Horrors (RSD) (LP)

    35,00

    1972 albumin uusintajulkaisu.

One of rock & roll’s pioneers of shock rock, the indescribable Screamin’ Jay Hawkins paved the way for music performance art and glam artists to come. His classic ”I Put A Spell On You,” included on this set, was banned from radio in 1956 for sexual overtones. His legendary performances had him dressed in gold and leopard costumes with props including rubber snakes, a smoking skull on a stick, and his signature coffin. Over his career he didn’t record many studio albums.

In 1972 he released ”A Portrait Of A Man and His Woman.” Long out-of-print, it was re-released on CD in 2001 as ”My Little Shop Of Horrors,” adding a recording of his signature hit, ”I Put A Spell On You,” which included cover versions of Conway Twitty’s ”It’s Only Make Believe,” Fats Domino’s ”Please Don’t Leave Me,” and Jesse Belvin’s ”Guess Who.”.

  • Little Richard - Southern Child (Ltd, RSD) (LP)

    29,00

Following 1971’s King Of Rock And Roll, Little Richard did something no one would have expected-he allowed his up-til-then, unrecognized country-rock leaning to emerge. Further, unlike it’s predecessor, all 14 songs on Southern Child were written or co-written by Richard. While there is the funk, rock and soul one would expect from Richard during this period, Southern Child was a predominantly country-rock affair. And while Little Richard had proven he could master any genre, the label decided to shelve the album, leaving it unissued until the tracks appeared on a long out of print label retrospective in 2005.

Recorded in the Spring of 1972 in Los Angeles, the album was recorded, mixed, mastered and handed into the label. It was given a catalog number and cover art was designed, but Reprise opted instead to release The Second Coming in it’s place. Both albums were recorded with Bumps Blackwell in the producer chair, at around the same time, but the reasons Southern Child was left behind are lost to time. Perhaps the label felt Little Richard’s audience wouldn’t follow him into unfamiliar musical territory regardless of their artists’ desire to explore.

Now finally, Southern Child appears for the first time the way Little Richard intended it.

  • Various - Rocka Rolla (Keb Darge’s Supreme) LP + CD (LP)

    22,00

The recent ‘Rocka Rolla’ series was masterfully launched by the boss himself. But for this second volume, El Vidocq steps aside for his English pal Keb Darge – who earlier so brilliantly contributed to the Jukebox Music Factory catalogue with his explosive selection ‘The Rockabilly Crown Jewels’.

Once again, our ever-enthusiastic limey swaggers and sparkles. His newest excellent assortment explores the garage rock and surf songs of his beloved ‘60s. Less sombre than the first, this second volume includes seminal punk rock tunes (She Lied by The Rockin’ Ramrods, Thunder Reef by The Shindings), but also a few veritable titty shakers (Les De Merle and his Bulldozer, or El Scorpion by The Sherwoods). Add a touch of surf (The Road Runners’ Quasimoto and Neb’s Tune by Ahab and The Wailers) and bingo baby! You’ve got ‘Keb Darge’s Supreme’. Lots of love, zero poor taste.

    Play it loud, friends!

  • Various - Shake-O-Rama Vol.4 LP+CD (LP)

    22,00

Fortunately, the recent lockdowns have failed to dampen the enthusiasm of our favorite Gascon selector El Vidocq. Quite the contrary! These past few months have allowed him to unearth a load of new nuggets and finally refire his engines with this Shake-O-Rama número quatro!

The new series’ design has been entrusted to the German jack-of-all-trades Marcel Bontempi, as talented musically (his group is cracking) as he is graphically (a fantastic illustrator). He’s duly imagined a fun, flamboyant and eminently fifties atmosphere to accompany these rediscovered tunes.

Free of any lulls or repetitions, this latest compilation is to be savored, with the mixed musical styles forming a seamless, irresistible stream.
Dance rhythm ‘n’ blues with Don Julian, Young Jessie and Oscar Boyd, soul with Erma Franklin (Aretha’s sister), rock ‘n’ roll with Chris Kevin, doo wop with The Nuggets, rockabilly with Roddy Jackson, surf with The Fugitives… and even yé-yé latino with Miguel Cordoba!! An exciting, thrilling, goose-bumping cascade, a veritable Colorado River of rapid melodies to relish again and again!

  • Various - Rocka Rolla (El Vidocq’s Supreme) LP + CD (LP)

Never before has El Vidocq so devilishly delved into the musical world of 1950s’ bad boys. Rocka Rolla!!! A combative compilation of taboos and transgressions, evoking sex and violence, drugs and alcohol, all fueling a fiery thirst for rebellion. Frightened by The Wild One, music industry squares tried to hit back with reassuring melodies like ‘I’m Not A Juvenile Delinquent’ (Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers) – but all too little, too late, for the rock ‘n’ roll rot had set in and society would never again be the same. Rocka Rolla!!!
From King Coleman’s barking ‘Bulldog’ to The Crew’s explosive ‘Hot Wire’, this selection snakes amongst tormented souls (Gene Summer’s ‘Nervous’), frayed nerves (‘The Freeze’ by Fenton and the Castle Rockers) and utter despair (Cecil Mc Cullough’s ‘Nothing Else To Loose’). Finally, the crepuscular ‘Rollin and Tumblin’ by Elmore James announces the night, but dancing not’s dead, as evidenced by Warner Mac’s mad ‘Roc-a-Chicka’. Rocka Rolla!!! Undoubtedly the darkest Jukebox Music Factory to date, this chutzpadik anthology is nevertheless full of fight. Rocka Rolla!!!

    Linernotes:
As a tasty contribution to your vinyl LP collection, this double album explores four avenues that reflect aspects of Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues club.

Founded July 3rd 1980, now celebrating 40 years of fun and dancing at London’s Number One Blues dance. Originally at Gossips in the basement of 69 Dean Street, with it’s entrance on Meard St., the cobbled alley that links it with Wardour Street in the heart of Soho, traditionally the hub of clubland and red light district in London’s West End. After djing & presenting bands there for over 14 years I moved the regular Thursday club night round the corner to St. Moritz,159 Wardour Street. Another great Soho basement dive with a huge history. The choice of music in this particular selection contains two fundamental styles of Rhythm and Blues oriented boogie music that influenced the world. The post war era of black dance music was driven by R&B that was the inspiration for the Rock`n´Roll of the 1950’s. Here you have a hard core Slice of
Black Rock & Roll, a side of rockin’ early 50’s R&B, it’s precursor on one platter. On the next disc you’ll hear a bunch of moving, exciting and at times frenzied 50’s Gospel. The idiom where
most R&B and black Rock`n´Roll and Soul stars learned their art and cut their teeth.
I was asked for this project to choose a bunch of Jamaican tunes to illustrate the role Jamaica’s music has played in influencing the style and direction of Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues.
These tracks are drawn from the very earliest days, at the inception of Ska in the late 50’s when Ja artists, having fell in love with US R&B, created their own take on it. I hope you enjoy this album for many years to come. Treasure it as I and all at Gaz’s Rockin Blues have treasured these tracks.

40 years and still going strong!

  • Richard Cliff And The Drifters - Cliff + 2 bonus Tracks (180 gram) (LP)

    17,00

In 1958, Britain produced its first ”authentic” rock & roll song and star, when Cliff Richard and The Drifters (not to be confused with the American R&B group by the same name) reached number 2 on the charts with “Move It,” which managed to combine a bluesy rock & roll riff with respectable lyrics and attitude. This essential edition contains Cliff Richard’s celebrated self-titled debut LP, Cliff, which was originally issued by Columbia Records in April 1959 (it reached #4 on the UK Album Chart), and has been long unavailable on vinyl. The set was recorded live at Abbey Road studios in front of an invited audience of his fast growing admirers. The 16 high-energy tracks are a representation both of the star’s own early repertoire, and the staples of any aspiring rock & roll band of the era – a piece of Elvis, a bit of Buddy Holly, a lump of Jerry Lee Lewis. This wild young iconoclast’s debut album retains every ounce of that power. Backed by The Shadows (at a time when they were still called The Drifters – later they changed their name to avoid a conflict with the homonymous American R&B group), it is a magnificent portrait of the team’s capabilities. In addition to the original album, this limited collector’s edition includes 2 bonus tracks from the same period: “Dynamite” and Carl Perkins’ “Pointed Toe Shoes.” This is some of the best material of Cliff Richard’s discography – primal British beat from the man who all but invented it.
CLIFF RICHARD, lead vocals, plus: THE DRIFTERS: Hank Marvin (lead guitar), Bruce Welch (rhythm guitar), Jet Harris (bass), Tony Meehan (drums). The Mike Sammes Singers (backing vocals on “Donna” and “Danny”). Recorded by Malcolm Addey at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, London, in front of an invited audience of 200 to 300 fans, February 1959. Original recordings produced by Norrie Paramor.
