  • Various - Smoking Reefers and Kicking the Gong (CD)

    13,00

Whatever its nomenclature, entertainers have long enjoyed a ’special relationship’ with cannabis/marijuana, particularly musicians and singers, who’ve long delighted in extolling the joys of recreational drugs.

This compilation deals with the leaf’s early years, when it was generally referred to as ’Reefer’ (sometimes, ’Gage’, ’Pot’, or ’Tea’), and was pretty much the exclusive domain of Jazz and Blues musicians.

The oldest sides featured herein are a couple of the earliest known druggies’ anthems, ’Willie the Chimney Sweeper’ (an homage to smoking opium, a practice then widely known as ’kicking the gong’) and ’Dope Head Blues’.

Some major artistes feature on this set, notably Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Champion Jack Dupree and The Ink Spots.

Mind you, many of the song titles are a dead giveaway: ’Reefer Man’, ’Sweet Marijuana Brown’, ’Reefer Head Woman’, ’Who Put The Benzedrine In Mrs Murphy’s Ovaltine?’, ’The Reefer Song (If You’re A Viper)’, etc.

  • Paulette Sisters - In The ’50s (CD)

    13,00

The Paulette Sisters were among the most prolific of all the singing sisters of the 1940’s, 50’s and early 60’s, recordings dozens of singles for such major labels as Decca, Columbia and Capitol, yet this is the very first CD compilation of their work.

They were early protégées of Connee Boswell and backed her on several sides as a quartet.

When one of the sisters left to get married, Connee coached them on becoming a trio like the Boswells.

This new Jasmine set focuses on their 50’s material, with orchestrations by Mitch Miller, Percy Faith, Larry Clinton, Dave Cavanaugh, and Sy Oliver, all remastered in pristine digital sound.

Before Keely Smith, there was Lily Ann Carol. When Louis Prima abandoned Dixieland and formed his first big band, the beautiful New York native was signed to be his star vocalist, and for more than six years – from 1940-1946 they were one of the most popular attractions in clubs and theatres across the country.

Here gathered together for the first time are nearly all of their recordings and this is the very first collection to throw a spotlight on Lily Ann, who up until now has been something of a mystery figure.

Among their wartime hits are ’Bell Bottom Trousers’, ’I’ll Walk Alone’, ’A Fellow on a Furlough’, ’Hitsum-Kitsum-Bumpity-Itsum’ ’The Lip’ and of course ’Oh Marie’

All tracks have been restored here in sparkling sound on a jam-packed Jasmine CD, with Lily Ann not only singing beautifully, but keeping up with Louis in the humour department as well.

  • Various - Mambo, Cha Cha Cha & Calypso Vol 4: European Session LP + CD

    22,00

Grouped together under one Caribbean banner, these typically Cuban melodies from the 1930s (Mambo) and
‘50s (Cha-cha-cha), further spicened with Trinidadian tunes from 1915 onwards (Calypso) bubble over to
form a frothing tryptic of irresistible dance songs. First released in the States, these sunny melodies very
rapidly spread around the world following the First World War…
After having first explored a bouquet of female singers (Vol. I), followed by the wild extravagance of this music
(Vol. II) and finally its links to Blues (Vol. III), El Vidocq here focuses on the impact and influences of Mambo,
Cha-cha-cha and Calypso within other regions of the world. Volume quatro: Europe! A hip-swaying road trip
through Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and last but not least France. Benefitting from markedly
mixed ensembles – for these countries often opened their arms to exiled musicians – the songs here
spotlighted are all strongly influenced by the Caribbean while yet retaining their own national flavors.
How can you not succumb to “La Suppa de Pichon” by Belgium’s Los Merecumbes, or to the “Cha Cha Twist” by
Spain’s Margarita Sierra? You’re sure to ᴉOlé! the “Torero” by the UK’s very own The Southlanders, while
shaking your bum to Bordeaux’s Ben y su Tumba and his fiery “Tequila” as audacious as the original by Chuck
    Rio!
Where in the world are we? And when? What the hell are we doing?! Gracias, danke schön Jukebox Music
Factory, for having once again shattered the yawnful space-time continuum!!

    SEX-O-RAMA
What a relief to escape the humdrum, to conquer one’s ennui, to spice up the too-long evenings stuck at
home… Here’s a proposition: SEX-O-RAMA!!! Oh la la, such an aptly named compilation! Rascally El
Vidocq this time dares to sway outside his comfort zone. Here humanity’s oldest obsession is tackled
tastefully, with class. The selection is amusing, but ever well-meaning, for these songs are as stimulating
to listen to as they are to dance to! Naturally, our intrepid collector had to roam beyond his habitual ‘50s
and ‘60s, for the real sexual revolution did occur a tad later… A few seductive caresses of varying
insistence (Michele Mercier, Geraldine), a few advances “in due and proper form” (naughty Prince Buster!),
an eloquent series of moans and groans (Rita, Armando Travaioli, Noelia Noel), chance encounters
(intransigent Jean Yanne)… not to mention a few exquisite parodies (Jacqueline Mayand and Bourvil, as
drole as they are tender)… So hesitate no longer! Stop biting your lip! The sap is rising, as they say, so
time for a change of ambiance… Time to slip on some SEX-O-RAMA!

  • Dors Diana - Swinging Dors – Expanded Edition (CD)

Blonde Bombshell DIANA DORS is one of a handful of big-name, bill-topping ’Hollywood Golden Era’ actresses who were greatly underrated as singers, and as a result made very few records.

Consequently her recorded legacy is minimal, running to little more than the sides gathered together on this set.

This compilation is built around her highly-regarded LP ’Swinging Dors’, recorded for Pye Records in 1960, which has become a collectors’ item over the ensuing years.

Also included is another serious collectors’ rarity, an earlier 78rpm single, ’I Feel So Mmm……’ / ’A Kiss And A Cuddle’, from 1953, alongside a track from a 1955 musical comedy, and five live performances from 1950s U.S. television shows.

A special ’bonus track’ features the soundbed to a short 1956 television interview with Bob Hope, on American TV.

This is a wholly unique compilation as this body of work has never been thus collated before, while the live TV performances have never previously appeared on CD.

Along with the hits there are also many of the most popular songs of the ’50s. However one the greatest features of this set has to be the inclusion of the full length album ’This Time I’m Swingin’!’ recorded with the gifted Nelson Riddle and in glorious stereo!

When Frank Sinatra launched the Reprise label in 1961, his friends and cronies gradually signed for the label; DEAN MARTIN was a case in point, joining their roster in early 1962, upon the expiry of his Capitol contract.

This compilation features his first two Reprise LPs, ’Dean Martin – French Style’ and ’Dino Latino’, the latter being a collection of largely Spanish favourites; both albums would be successfully reissued after Dino hit big with ’Everybody Loves Somebody’, a couple of years hence.

Also included, as bonus tracks, are Dino’s first few Reprise singles, ’Tik-A-Tee, Tik-A-Tay’, ’Just Close Your Eyes’, ’From The Bottom Of My Heart (Dammi, Dammi, Dammi)’, ’Who’s Got The Action?’, and ’Sam’s Song’ , the latter a duet with Sammy Davis Jr.

This is the first time this body of work has been thus compiled, while the bonus tracks are notoriously difficult to find elsewhere on CD.

This music brings glamour into every hut, with all the candles, lights and crackling stoves, while outside it is snowing and stormy…

Accordingly, you should definitely get the previous ’Season’s Greetings,’ because then you can listen to all the CDs one after the other staying in Christmas fever. Some of the tracks are on CD for the first time. For example both sides of a single by the Georgie Auld Orchestra with the fantastic singer Bill Darnel, which was released on Coral at that time containing its title song Christmas Ball, as well as the B-side, It Ain’t Snowin’ Outside. Some exotic components come from The Surfers with Hawaiian sounds and The Enchanters with a mix of doo wop and mambo! For a laugh, the CD also contains a series of novelty recordings, from well-known and unknown greats like Barry Gordon, The Lennon Sisters and Kay Martin. Who remembers the touching Christmas movie classic with James Stewart? This film tempted us to involve some top movie stars with their comedic talents from Hollywood’s golden era: Cary Grant, Mickey Rooney and Jerry Lewis! Rare recordings, but listen for yourself!
