  • Williams Joe - Basie & Beyond 1955-1957 (CD)

Here are 22 tracks illustrating Joe Williams’ transition from Count Basie’s greatest singer to a solo star in the jazz world. The set begins with 10 tracks from his tenure with Basie recorded between 1955 and 1957. The second half of this set features his debut LP released in 1957 ’A Man Ain’t Supposed to Cry’ which is featured in its entirety from tracks 11-22.

This is a wonderful mix of rocking blues and sophisticated ballads from a performer of immense importance who after leaving his tenure with the Basie band in 1961 went on to record scores of excellent albums.

Sit back and listen as Joe Williams wraps his rich baritone voice around these superb tracks.

  • Various - Get ’Em Off! – Music for Strippers – From Burlesque to Strip Clubs (CD)

28 tracks of music mostly from the world of jazz and r&b to take your clothes off to.

No set of stripping music would be complete without the most famous song associated with the pastime, ’The Stripper’.

8 of these titles come from a famous 1950s LP called ’How To Strip for Your Husband’ and most of the other tracks and artists come from the world of jazz and r&b.

The music on offer here were the kinds of tracks that the performers themselves, certainly in America would choose for their musical accompaniment.

  • Leiber & Stoller Big Band - Good Rock and Roll for Dancing (CD)

This is the first collection to combine the two legendary albums made by the great songwriting team of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller.

’Scooby Doo’ was released in 1956 under Jerry Leiber’s name and it is chock full of, as the title suggests, ’Good Rock & Roll for Dancing’ which is all played by the cream of Los Angeles jazz men including Ernie Freeman and Plas Johnson. ’Yakety Yak’ followed in 1960 and includes 11 superb versions of their biggest hits including ’Bazoom’, ’Jailhouse Rock’, ’Hound Dog’ and of course ’Yakety Yak’ all played by what is essentially the Count Basie Band just without the Count himself. Great stuff!

  • Dors Diana - Swinging Dors – Expanded Edition (CD)

Blonde Bombshell DIANA DORS is one of a handful of big-name, bill-topping ’Hollywood Golden Era’ actresses who were greatly underrated as singers, and as a result made very few records.

Consequently her recorded legacy is minimal, running to little more than the sides gathered together on this set.

This compilation is built around her highly-regarded LP ’Swinging Dors’, recorded for Pye Records in 1960, which has become a collectors’ item over the ensuing years.

Also included is another serious collectors’ rarity, an earlier 78rpm single, ’I Feel So Mmm……’ / ’A Kiss And A Cuddle’, from 1953, alongside a track from a 1955 musical comedy, and five live performances from 1950s U.S. television shows.

A special ’bonus track’ features the soundbed to a short 1956 television interview with Bob Hope, on American TV.

This is a wholly unique compilation as this body of work has never been thus collated before, while the live TV performances have never previously appeared on CD.

  • Martin Dean - That’s Amore Baby! – The Great Hit Sounds Of… (2CD) (CD)

Like the other legendary members of ’The Rat Pack’, the eternally cool Dean Martin really needs no introduction but in case you didn’t know… Dean Martin was a major star of records, stage, screen, radio, television and night clubs as a singer, comedian, dramatic actor. How’s that for a start?

Here we have some of his very best recording sessions of the ’50s and early ’60s including the major hits: ’That’s Amore’, ’Memories Are Made of This’, ’Standing on the Corner’, ’Innamorata’, ’Young and Foolish’, and ’Return to Me’.

Along with the hits there are also many of the most popular songs of the ’50s. However one the greatest features of this set has to be the inclusion of the full length album ’This Time I’m Swingin’!’ recorded with the gifted Nelson Riddle and in glorious stereo!

  • Martin Dean - Joins Reprise (CD)

When Frank Sinatra launched the Reprise label in 1961, his friends and cronies gradually signed for the label; DEAN MARTIN was a case in point, joining their roster in early 1962, upon the expiry of his Capitol contract.

This compilation features his first two Reprise LPs, ’Dean Martin – French Style’ and ’Dino Latino’, the latter being a collection of largely Spanish favourites; both albums would be successfully reissued after Dino hit big with ’Everybody Loves Somebody’, a couple of years hence.

Also included, as bonus tracks, are Dino’s first few Reprise singles, ’Tik-A-Tee, Tik-A-Tay’, ’Just Close Your Eyes’, ’From The Bottom Of My Heart (Dammi, Dammi, Dammi)’, ’Who’s Got The Action?’, and ’Sam’s Song’ , the latter a duet with Sammy Davis Jr.

This is the first time this body of work has been thus compiled, while the bonus tracks are notoriously difficult to find elsewhere on CD.

    Christmas Ball!
With this compilation we want to give more exuberance to the celebration of love, although some of the songs are nostalgic and dreamy and you might even feel transported back to your own childhood. This Christmas disc invites you to the Christmas ball, to dancing, to swinging, to contemplation and cheerfulness among family members, friends, like-minded people and guests. This music brings glamour into every hut, with all the candles, lights and crackling stoves, while outside it is snowing and stormy…
Again a parade of rarities for Christmas
As always, part of the concept is to focus on rare recordings that are not found on every Christmas collection. Accordingly, you should definitely get the previous ’Season’s Greetings,’ because then you can listen to all the CDs one after the other staying in Christmas fever. Some of the tracks are on CD for the first time. For example both sides of a single by the Georgie Auld Orchestra with the fantastic singer Bill Darnel, which was released on Coral at that time containing its title song Christmas Ball, as well as the B-side, It Ain’t Snowin’ Outside. Some exotic components come from The Surfers with Hawaiian sounds and The Enchanters with a mix of doo wop and mambo! For a laugh, the CD also contains a series of novelty recordings, from well-known and unknown greats like Barry Gordon, The Lennon Sisters and Kay Martin. Who remembers the touching Christmas movie classic with James Stewart? This film tempted us to involve some top movie stars with their comedic talents from Hollywood’s golden era: Cary Grant, Mickey Rooney and Jerry Lewis! Rare recordings, but listen for yourself! Of course, the CD also comes with liner notes for each song, rare photos and many illustrations in the 24-page booklet!

  • Various - Destination Lust – Songs of Love, Sex And Violence (CD)

1-CD with 28-page booklet, 32 tracks. Total playing time approx. 78 minutes.
    • A crazy compilation of songs and instrumentals about the ’most beautiful trivial thing in the world’: love, sex and its varieties.
    • Rare and interesting recordings at a reasonable price in Bear Family’s ’Destination’ series.
    • Erotic-nostalgic is what this album is all about. Back when women were still allowed to be full females and the ideal of beauty was not yet the ’hunger hook’. Back then, when sex was not talked about but sung about, not to forget the renaissance of burlesque shows.
    • Here presented on over 30 musical jewels from three decades.
    • Among those two songs about the legendary story of ’Christine’, by Miss X and her Italian answer Andrea Tosi.
    • Also included: a rendezvous of international sex bombs and film divas like Jayne Mansfield, Lizabeth Scott, Ann-Margret, Elke Sommer, April Stevens and Mamie van Doren!
    • Plus fabulous instrumentals that orchestrate the scenes in striptease clubs and burlesque shows! Not to forget the harder gaits on the erotic playground.
Hits and rarities are combined here. The rarities predominate, many of them for the first time on CD!
Song by song notes by Bill Dahl in the richly illustrated colourful 28-page booklet.
    Erotic retrospect into earlier decades
Eroticism and sexuality was officially not an issue in the first decades after the war. But unofficially, behind closed doors, in dark smoky clubs, strip clubs and under the counter, there was a lot going on. Meaning, the people back then did it just as wildly as today, just not so obviously. Of course, this did not pass by the music, and this is exactly what is impressively proven here!
    Destination: Desire
Besides the great listening pleasure, this compilation takes you on a journey towards lust. The desire for erotic bar banter – sex bombs with erotic voices make you dream and some songs make you smile. Very rare masters and nostalgic hits alternate. Everyone remembers Teach Me Tiger by April Stevens or the novelty number Love Potion No.9 by the Clovers! Some rare recordings have been released here on CD for the first time. Among them Andrea Tosis La Sorella Di Cristine and Ruth Wallis’ Long-Playing Daddy! There are also plenty of orchestral numbers that convey the wicked atmosphere of equally wicked establishments. Most notably The Stripper by David Rose, plus Cozy Cole, Slim Gaillard and the wonderful version of Fever by Richard Marino & His Orchestra. But the sound of this compilation comes mainly from Hollywood’s international sex symbols: Jayne, Mamie, Lizabeth, Elke, Lola, Ann-Margret – get to the microphone! The CD is accompanied by annotations to each song by the great music journalist Bill Dahl and many photos and illustrations in the 28-page booklet!

  • Dane Barbara - Trouble In Mind/Livin’ With The Blues (CD)

Lifelong political activist and Blues/Jazz/Folk singer BARBARA DANE – namechecked by the likes of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, etc, and routinely compared with Bessie Smith – commenced her recording career in 1956.

Possessor of an extraordinary voice, in 1958 Time Magazine described her: ’The voice is pure, rich and carries the dusky legato that still echoes the New Orleans of forty years ago… as rare as a 20 carat diamond.’

This compilation pairs up her first two LPs, Trouble In Mind (1957) and Livin’ With The Blues (1959), plus a trio of contemporaneous bonus tracks, recorded in 1956.

For many years her early recordings were unavailable in any format; this is the first time these sides have been thus paired up.

Described as ’America’s Great Lost/Forgotten Icon’, she is only now, belatedly, receiving due acknowledgement.

Barbara still records and performs occasionally; in 2017 she headlined a gig at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, in honour of her 90th birthday.

  • Humes Helen - Today I Sing the Blues 1944-1955 (CD)

I’ve been called a blues singer, a jazz singer, and a ballad singer – well, I’m all three, which means I’m just a singer’. That is a quote that Helen Humes was fond of using throughout her career. She was, like many singers of her generation, Caucasian or African American, proud of her versatility and proud of her resistance to any kind of musical genre pigeon holing. Having said that, this collection of 28 of her recordings does indeed put her firmly into the blues genre, albeit blues with a definite Jazz bias.

Playing with her across these various recording dates are, Conte Candoli, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Chico Hamilton, Chuck Norris, Ernie Freeman, Jackie Kelso, Camille Howard, Roy Milton, Buck Clayton, Teddy Wilson, Maxwell Davis, Lester Young, Bill Doggett and even more. How cool is that list.

This CD contains several of her jukebox hit records like ’Be-Baba-Leba’, ’Million Dollar Secret’.

  • Various - Mod Jazz Rides Again (CD)

So “Mod Jazz” rides again does it? Well, if it does it will be on a pristine 1960 Vespa GS, very pure, with no gaudy additions, looking as sharp as it did when it came off the production line. It’s an early summer night, so as you ride between café and bar you can be observed in your midnight blue lightweight mohair. A quick espresso and off you go to the next spot, where the music that soundtracks the night is just kicking off. That is the essence of mod jazz and listening to this compilation will put you there.

As ever we provide a mix of known and unknown names, with records that would cost a small fortune, and others you could buy quite easily now you know what they are. Take Sammy Davis Jr and his take on the Tony Hatch song ‘I Know A Place’. The album it springs from is easy to find, but who would think to check out such an unpromising proposition. Yet Buddy Rich gets the party swinging and Sammy drags you along; who wouldn’t go there. It’s a similar vibe on Jimmy Witherspoon’s ‘Hey, Mrs Jones’ – big band brassiness and hip sangfroid from the singer. Nina Simone is even hipper with her Ray Charles answer-record ‘Come On Back, Jack’ – pure mod jazz dynamite!

Elsewhere we have all of our favourite jazzy sounds. If you want organ there’s the wonderful Memphis-based Playboy Five’s version of Howlin’ Wolf’s ‘Spoonful’, Johnny “Hammond” Smith taking on Ray Charles, ‘High Heel Sneakers’ re-imagined by Jackie Ivory, and the wild sound of Rhonda Scott with the Eastern-influenced ‘Sha-Bazz’. We also have latin sounds from percussionist Montego Joe and trombonist Harold Betters, who takes it south of the border on ‘Hot Tamale Man’. We have brassy blues from Otis Spann, T-Bone Walker and Clarence Daniels’ band featuring Obie Jessie, and plenty of those instrumentals that owe more to soul than jazz but are an essential part of the mod jazz profile – including the Eddie Bo-produced ‘Timber’ by Candy Phillips, Jimmy Mayes & the Soul Breed’s ‘Pluckin’’ and Gate Wesley’s ‘Do The Thing’.

As ever we end with the coolest of closers – the Bobby Jenkins Quartet’s ‘What Is Love’, which takes you out into the breeze of the small hours, onto another adventure.
