  • Various - Hells Bells – Swing Candies For Doomsdays (10``LP)

    18,00

It was neither a ‘stormy Monday’, nor ‘a similar bad Tuesday’, when the Retrograph got a call for doing the artwork of old pal Little Victor’s ‘Lo-Fi Recordings’ vinyl platter for Stag-O-Lee. We came in touch and shortly after, the idea of compiling weird stuff for ‘the 5th season’ was born. It would have been way too easy concentrating on titles with ‘Ghost’, ‘Spook’ or ‘Devil’ simply in the titles of often very boring and only fast or unbelievable lame tracks, so we went ahead doing something more subtle and special, spanning the decades from the 1920s through the 1940s in a very wild manner. At last, we kicked the term ‘Halloween’ as it should be played the whole year through and every track is solid sending stuff for sophisticated Lindy Hop, Shag or Balboa-dancing.

It was so much fun digging through tons of old 78 rpm records, recording lots of material and listening to them over and over again,

kicking out, taking in, discovering stuff that was unheard over the last years and seemed sleeping til dawn. – Then came the artwork and we wanted to do something special here as well, so we have taken an old Vocalion shellac sleeve from the 30s as a base for our own needs, trying to preserve the feel of old records from about eight decades ago. I am sure, it is a nice anachronism in a time, where it is possible, simply pressing a button on the telephone makes you hear whatever you like, almost everything and everywhere. – I hope, there will be still lots of black holes in the world wide web in future.

The original records on this disc are from my personal collection that has grown now for about 40 years. Hence the sound cannot be perfect state of the art, but we tried our best to preserve these mighty fine tunes for the future. So enjoy and I hope, you’ll love them and play them over and over and … cry for more.

It’s Saturday night in Berlin and the Hoochie Krew is stirring it up. DJ Don Rogall surveys the crowd, takes a sip of beer , and slides a 10″ screamer onto the deck. As the scruffy yowl of a guit ar unites with an insistent upbeat, a man in a beret shout s into a mic, speaking in tongues, transported, ”Wobedoowop! Do the Camel Twist!” Go-go girls in leop ard print bikinis undulate to the wail of a sax. A sultry showgirl appears like a mirage and peels off a cryst al-crusted glove to whistles and whoop s. It’s a juke joint, a barrel house, an alternate time and dimension, with the whole room flailing in giddy unison, spirited into that raw , earthy , element al rhythm.

    That is the Hoochie Koo.

This is the first volume in the Hoochie Koo series.

  • Various - The Weekend Starts Here Vol. 2 – Slow Popcorn Boppers (10``LP)

    18,00

    Strictly limited to 500 copies!

The 2nd volume of the The Weekend Starts Here series deals exclusively with the Popcorn genre. Popcorn is a style of music and dancing first established in Belgium in the 1970s and 1980s. The style includes a wide variety of mostly American and British recordings of R&B and pop music made between the late 1950s and mid 1960s, often relatively obscure, and characterised by a slow or medium, rather than fast, tempo. The Popcorn music scene first developed from dances held at the Groove discotheque in Ostend, where mid-tempo soul and ska music played by DJ Freddy Cousaert became popular in the late 1960s.

In September 1969, a café, De Oude Hoeve, opened in a converted farm barn at Vrasene near Antwerp, and began holding dance competitions on Sunday afternoons. Soon up to 3,000 people began attending each week, dancing in a ”slow swing” style. De Oude Hoeve was later renamed Popcorn and the special genre has it’s name. Later on the Dj’s messed up a perfectly fine recipe by adding all kinds of pop tunes as long as the tempo was right.

This 10” however features 12 pure Popcorn groovers from the “golden era”.

Nearly 30 years ago, a now legendary LP by the name of ‘Forbidden City Dogfood’ was unleashed on an unsuspecting public. The release on VIP VOP Recs spawned many imitators such as ‘Wavy Gravy, 4 Hairy Policemen et al’ and paved the way for the equally legendary ‘Purple Knif Show’…

What few folk knew was that ‘Forbidden City Dogfood’ was actually less than half of the compilation made by Lux Interior…Here for the very first time the entire recording is now available, fully complete and weighing in at well over an hour of crazy, whacky sounds from the Maestro of Mad himself.

Remastered from the original source, these obscure Rockabilly, Surf, R&B tracks will wow you now as then…interspersed with B-Movie trailer clips and wigged out voice overs, you just know it’s better than good !…..Won’t be around for long, so get it while you can.

  • Various - The Weekend Starts Here! – Mod Sounds From The Late 50s And Early 60’s (10``LP)

    18,00

    Strictly limited to 500 copies!

On this limited edition 10“ you’ll hear tunes the Modernist cherished in the early 60’s. An ultracool mix of danceable Rhythm & Blues, Hammond Jazz, raw electric Blues from labels like Chess and Excello and something that mutated into Soul in the years to come. As there was no proper distribution at the time and one could not fly to the United States to buy records like today (prices for flights were enormous) these tunes could only be heard in Clubs like The Scene or Flamingo spun by forward thinking DJ’s like Guy Stevens.

Mod is a subculture that began in London in 1958 and spread throughout Great Britain and elsewhere, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries, and continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to Modern Jazz. Significant elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music (including Soul, Ska, and R&B); and motor scooters (usually Lambretta or Vespa(. The original mod scene was associated with amphetamine-fuelled all-night dancing at clubs.“ (Wikipedia)
