Wynonie Harris (1915 – 1969) was – along with Jimmy Rushing, Big Joe Turner and Roy Brown – one of the most successful blues shouters in the 1940s and early 1950s, known for songs with sometimes humorous, but often lyrics full of sexual innuendo.

He achieved fifteen listings on the Top10 R&B charts from 1946 to 1952. His highly successful 1948 cover of the Roy Brown song Good Rocking Tonight is widely regarded as an early precursor to rock ’n’ roll.

Bear Family Records® is releasing a reissue of an extremely early and extremely rare French 25cm record in the popular ’Vinyl Club Exclusive’ series on colored vinyl. The 10″ LP contains some of his greatest hits, great R&B or early rock ’n’ roll, depending on how you want to classify Wynonie’s music.

The graphic design of the gorgeous cover is by C. Danest, who has designed about twenty other beautiful covers for French Vogue in the jazz genre. His first name is unfortunately not known …

Reproduction of the original cover of the exclusive French edition.
Carefully remastered for this LP release and pressed on high quality vinyl!
Limited edition of 500 copies in colored vinyl!

In 1959, Big Joe Turner’s album ’Big Joe Is Here’ was released as a regular long-playing record, at first in the U.S. on Atlantic 8033. Three years later, the French Atlantic label took down two tracks – Don’t You Cry and After My Laughter Came Tears – from the original LP and released ’Big Joe Is Here’ as a 10inch LP under the new title ’Blues No. 5’ with a different cover under catalog number 332015.

The recordings for ’Big Joe Is Here’ or ’Blues No. 5’ were made in the late 1950s after Big Joe Turner had landed great rhythm and blues and R’n’R hits a few years earlier.

In those days Turner took his cue from Kansas City combo jazz, singing blues ballads and occasionally letting his rock side break through. An atmospherically dense and soulful work.

On two single high-quality 25cm LPs, Bear Family Records® presents an overview of the creative years of this underrated label that released great rhythm ’n’ blues, soul, blues and rock ’n’ roll throughout the early 1960s.
Volume 2 with a focus on the label’s rhythm ‘n’ blues and soul sides.
This LP delivers rare tunes that are hard to find on the original format, recordings by Jimmy Dotson, Willie Cobbs, Ed Pauling and the ‘5‘ Royales, among others.
The 12-page colored folder includes extensive liner notes by Chicago music expert Bill Dahl, with photos from the label archives.
Memphis, Tennessee: large urban metropolis on the Mississippi River, home to such legendary record labels as Sun, Stax, Hi Records and … Home Of The Blues!

Memphis-based Home of the Blues Records cooked up more than its share of blistering singles during its all-too-brief early ’60s lifespan. Headed by Ruben Cherry (owner of a famous record store of the same handle on Beale Street where Elvis and Johnny Cash shopped) and his aunt, Celia G. Camp, HOTB specialized in tough, horn-driven Memphis R&B tightly arranged by its house bandleader, trumpeter Willie Mitchell. Its talent roster was split between veteran stars (Roy Brown, The ‘5’ Royales) and big-voiced obscurities that included New Orleans emigre Dave Dixon and Charles James, whose infectious rendition of One Mint Julep for HOTB’s affiliated Zab logo is one of the myriad highlights of Bear Family’s 10-inch vinyl LP ’Soul House.’

The 5 Royales’ Catch That Teardrop and Willie Cobbs’ original You Don’t Love Me (later revived by The Allman Brothers) are here as well, along with hard-to-find gems by Jimmy Dotson, Billy Adams, and Bill Yates. The instrumental title track is a dazzling showcase for Royales guitarist Lowman Pauling’s slashing fretwork.
