    Introducing The Blackjacks…

Mike Wallbank (24) on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Pete Lawson (25) on double bass and vocal harmony. Heavily influenced by Rockabilly, country and British skiffle, The Blackjacks’ sound is at once rooted and authentic, yet uniquely contemporary. This extended-play 7” is their debut release.

We first witnessed the lads on 16th January 2018, at Liverpool’s Cavern Club, playing an acoustic set for the launch party of Vee-Tone’s The Cavern Club: Jazz & Skiffle LP (VTRLP2043). Blown away by their performance, we immediately asked them to come into a studio and lay down some tracks. During sessions in April and accompanied by Chris Smith (24) on electric guitar and Steve Lawson (20) on drums, the pair proved enthusiastic, professional, hardworking, and remarkably talented; impressing us with interpretations of other artists’ songs and their own tightly-crafted, humorous material.

The title track of this EP is a fresh, rockabilly-styled take on a song alleged to have been the first ever written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Though penned circa 1957-58 and recorded in an R&B style by The Beatles in 1963, the track remained officially unreleased until it was reworked for their 1970 Let It Be album.

Dig this first hand dealt by The Blackjacks and bet that there’s more to come!

Following the success of The Blackjacks debut e.p. ‘One After 909’, Vee-Tone Records are delighted to be releasing their follow up single (double A side) ‘Burn Your Playhouse Down’ and ‘Cool Grooves’.

‘Burn Your Playhouse Down’ was a track originally recorded by country legend George Jones at Starday studios in the mid 50’s, the recording lay unreleased until 1979 when it was issued by ACE Records on their excellent George Jones ‘White Lightning’ LP.  It’s a long-overlooked track that The Blackjacks have resurrected and given it a complete rockin’ make-over.

The flip side of this killer double sider features the hugely catchy ‘Cool Grooves’, a Blackjacks original and sure to become an anthem for all us unfashionable ‘non-conformists’ out there!   We love this track, cleverly crafted lyrics and a great beat.  Any track containing the following lyrics is a winner as far we’re concerned… “the sound is bleak and it never gets going, you should have listened to some Buck Owens, keep your cool grooves away from me!”

Vee-Tone Records are delighted to release ‘Elvis Presley Posters’ (VTR-LP-2055) the debut album from The Blackjacks, one of the most exciting new talents on the ‘roots’ music scene today.  If you’ve caught these young lads live, then you’ll know exactly why they’re causing such a stir.

Check ’em out performing ’Elvis Presley Posters’ live at the legendary Cavern Club, Liverpool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N58sLjbxGB0

2020 is set to be a really busy year for the lads, with more studio recording sessions scheduled and live appearances at top festivals throughout Europe.

    The Blackjacks are:

    ·         Mike Wallbank – lead vocals and rhythm guitar

    ·         Pete Lawson – double bass and vocal harmony

    ·         Chris ‘the Sherriff’ Smith – electric guitar

    ·         Luke Moran – drums

When recently asked to categorise their style, we honestly struggled to do so.  They are most certainly soaked in ‘roots’ music, but transcend multiple genres to create a fresh new sound that’s all their own.  They’re not pure rockabilly, they’re not pure skiffle, they’re not out and out country… quite simply they are The Blackjacks!  Great musicianship, boss vocal harmonies and catchy infectious tunes abound!

What others say: “There are hundreds of bands currently playing roots music in the UK, but I can’t name one that comes close to the fresh new sound and cleverly crafted songs that these young guys have created.” – Jerry Chatabox (music promoter).

“They sound like the bands did in the old days. The energy of the band resonates through the tracks.” – Marty Wilde (rock ‘n’ roll legend).

‘Elvis Presley Posters’ features 14 brand new recordings, with a special guest appearance on 3 tracks from neo rockabilly legend, James G. Creighton (ex Shakin’ Pyramids) laying down some mean guitar licks!  James gifted the lads his own composition, ‘Jake The Snake’ our closing track.

The album flows from track to track seamlessly, we reckon our title track ’Elvis Presley Posters’ is the best Elvis related track since the late great Kirsty MacColl’s ’There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis’…. it’s cleverly written, totally catchy and once in your head you just can’t shake it
