Various - Steelin` It – The Steel Guitar Story 4CD Boxset (CD)

22,00

The steel guitar is a predominant instrument in country music, but it had its origins in Hawaii. It was Mexican settlers who introduced the Spanish guitar to Hawaii, where they were modified by raising both the bridge and head nut. A head nut converter nut was used to raise the height of the strings by about half an inch, and the instrument was played on the lap, hence the Lap Steel Guitar”. Joseph Kekuku was credited by many as the inventor of the lap steel guitar in 1889. allegedly he was walking along a railroad track strumming his guitar when he spotted a bolt lying on the ground. He picked up the bolt and slid it along the strings. Intrigued by the sound this created he taught himself to play with the back of a knife blade. In 1904 he left Hawaii for mainland America and over the next 15 years taught a whole host of people how to play the guitar Hawaiian style. He went on to tour Europe and played at the London Palladium and the Café

de Paris, before returning to the USA in the late ’20s, settling in Chicago. He died in 1932 aged 58 of a brain haemorrhage. Others who have also been given credit in the late 19th century for formulating the steel guitar Charles E. King credited with being the originator of playing the guitar with a knife (circa 1885), albeit he conceded that Kekuku was the actual inventor of the Hawaiian guitar per se. The third claimant to inventing the steel guitar was Hawaiian James Hoa who was of Portuguese origins, who it was claimed by David M. Kupihea in an article in the Honolulu Advertiser in 1932,

invented the instrument in 1876. However this claim is the least feasible one of the three. The instrument came over in force to mainland America in 1915 when Hawaiian groups appeared at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The instrument was picked up by blues and Western Swing bands as well as country artists such as Jimmie Rodgers. It also found its way into pop music as well as African (especially Nigeria’s Jùjú music) and Indian music. In the

’30s the hollow body instrument was supplanted by a flat wooden slab with an electric pickup. The likes of Adolph Rickenbacher, Paul Bigsby and Leo Fender helped develop and manufacture the first popular electric steel guitars. These were known as laptop steel guitars.
