Graham Bond Organization - The Sound Of 65 (180 gram) (LP)
€23,00Although the Organization’s first album was recorded a mere year or two before Cream’s debut, it bears little resemblance to Cream’s pioneering hard blues-rock. Instead, it’s taut British R&B with a considerable jazz influence. That influence comes not so much from the rhythm section as saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and lead singer/organist Bond himself.
This LP is not as exciting or rock-oriented as those of contemporaries like the Rolling Stones or John Mayall, but is respectably gritty, mostly original material, with an occasionally nasty edge. There are some obscure treasures of the British R&B explosion to be found here, including the original version of Train Time (later performed by Cream), the thrilling bass runs on Baby Be Good to Me,and the group’s hardboiled rearrangements of such traditional standards as Wade in the Water and Early in the Morning.Even their blatant stab at commercialism (the ballad Tammy) has its charm – Richie Unterberger.

Chantays - Two Sides of the Chantays / Pipeline (CD)
€13,00The Chantays were just a handful of kids when they recorded some of the best surf guitar licks of all time. The title track ”Pipeline” is a legend for good reason, as theirs is probably the best recording ever of this often-covered classic. There are other tracks on this that deserve equal recognition, including ”El Conquistator,” ”Continental Missile,” and the great instrumental cover of the Johnny Cash classic ”Riders in the Sky.”

Vaughan Jimmie - Do You Get The Blues? (CD)
€18,00”Jimmie Vaughan is a master of mood, but not ostentatiously so; he’s too slick for that. You think you’re getting a slab of solid electric blues with Do You Get the Blues?–and as a matter of fact, you are–but this particular slab cuts all the way to the bone. It begins innocuously enough, with a relaxed instrumental piece set to a shuffle beat, until you realize the track’s called ”Dirty Girl.” Then things slow down even more for ”Out of the Shadows,” and this one looks like a downer, but no, Vaughan addresses an upbeat subject here. Likewise, ”Off the Deep End” ambles along amiably enough, but there’s a current of tension underpinning the song, until we reach the line ”And the water’s fine.” Here, the music relaxes, mirroring the lyrics. And so on, through a cover of ”Power of Love” (with killer vocals from fellow Texan Lou Ann Barton), so that when ”Without You” suits music to sentiment, it has even more impact. This subtlety is Vaughan’s mastery at work. He does what you don’t expect, contrasting music with subject matter, avoiding musical clichés like the plague, and doing all of it so offhandedly that you never realize what he’s up to. Hence the flute on ”Don’t Let the Sun Set” is moving, as opposed to cheesy, while ”In the Middle of the Night” has a sexy, swinging beat and heartbroken lyrics. True, Vaughan is a better musician than he is a lyricist, but he’s good enough at the former that few are likely to complain. -Genevieve Williams
