  • Hooker John Lee - Documenting The Sensation Recordings 1948-52 (3CD) (CD)

    John Lee Hooker’s 1948-1952 recordings made in Detroit, Michigan by Bernard Besman. Includes 19 previously unissued versions.

    Ace acquired a lot of John Lee Hooker sides when they purchased the Sensation label from Bernard Besman. Bernie had also sold some sides to United Artists and to Greene Bottle before then. However, no-one has carried out a forensic investigation into exactly what Ace had bought, until now.

    These three CDs contain all of the Ace-owned Besman John Lee Hooker sides gathered in one place for the first time. Also included is the Little Eddie Kirkland RPM single with John Lee Hooker on second guitar and vocal. There has been meticulous tape research for best sources, so the mastering far exceeds anything presented before, as anyone who has the Boogie Chillen’ /Boogie Chillen’ #2 10-inch 78 Ace recently issued can attest.

    19 different, previously unreleased versions of songs appeared in the research for the project, including extended takes and alternative versions. The collection comes as a 3CD digipak box set.

    The accompanying booklet features an introductory note from Peter Guralnick, a comprehensive overview of the music from Dr Wayne Goins, Director of Jazz Studies at Kansas State University, and a sessionography covering all the tracks on the CDs. These early Hooker recordings are akin to jazz as much as the blues, with an improvisatory feel, harking back to the pre-war era, but with a very distinct approach and a unique sound presaging the blues that was to come…

  • Dion - Ruby Baby / Donna The Prima Donna (CD)

    Having quit the Belmonts in late 1960, Dion DiMucci enjoyed a string of solo hits on Laurie, including the million-selling Runaround Sue, and two Top 20 albums before signing to Columbia Records in late 62. By now a major star, Dion’s arrival at the label heralded a significant sea change; then-A&R director/producer Mitch Miller’s dislike of rock ’n’ roll was no secret while Dion himself was eager to break away from the irksome teen idol tag at odds with his own musical inclinations.

    Dion’s first Columbia single, a bluesy cover of Leiber & Stoller’s Ruby Baby, peaked at #2 and spawned the first of two LPs released in 1963. With Robert Mersey producing, the album was a broad mix of American standards (You Made Me Love You), covers of newly minted Pop hits (The End Of The World) and original material in a tear-jerky vein no doubt chosen to appeal both to teens and the young at heart.

    Released in March 63 Ruby Baby became his third Top 20 album. By contrast its follow-up, Donna The Prima Donna (November 1963), fared less well, yet was arguably more Dion’s bag. Capitalising on a recent regional doo wop revival, alongside the self-penned title hit (#6), it included two Cleftones songs, Goffin & King’s This Little Girl (#21) and a cover of Be Careful Of Stones That You Throw (#31), a composition Dion had heard as a youngster by way of Hank Williams Luke the Drifter recordings.

    Paradoxically, with every hit single Columbia appeared to grow more uneasy, perhaps because their desire to mould Dion into an MOR act for the supper club set seemed ever less likely. Increasingly disillusioned and eschewing the British Invasion, Dion turned his attention towards folk and blues. After a fallow spell during which he bought himself out of his Columbia contract, Dion developed a more contemplative style, eventually returning to the US Top 5 with Abraham, Martin And John in 1968. Presented in glorious stereo, Ruby Baby and Donna The Prima Donna make their CD debut here, reinvigorating Ace’s acclaimed series of Dion DiMucci 2-on-1 album reissues after more than a decade. Memorabilia-laden package includes informative liner notes and a detailed sessionography.

  • Hatfield Bobby - The Other Brother – a Solo Anthology 1965-1970 (CD)

    –  The voices of the Righteous Brothers are still heard all over the world today, thanks to magnificent mid- 60s hits such as ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’’ and ‘(You’re My) Soul And Inspiration’.

    – Although the duo was a 50/50 partnership, deepvoiced Bill Medley is probably better remembered by the public than Bobby Hatfield. Nevertheless, it was the soulful tenor of Hatfield that propelled ‘Unchained Melody’ to the top of the charts in 1966, and again in 1988 thanks to exposure in the blockbuster film Ghost.

    – When the act disbanded in 1968, both men pursued solo careers, with limited success. Medley’s solo work has been anthologised but this Ace release is the first time Hatfield has been afforded a CD showcasing his own massive and much-missed talents.

    – “The Other Brother” is an essential release, for not just Righteous Brothers fans but for everyone who enjoys quality late 60s soul music. Along with three Righteous Brothers hits that were Bobby Hatfield solo recordings in all but name, the collection features a cross-section of his best solo 45s, plus his only album, 1971’s “Messin’ In Muscle Shoals”, in its entirety.

    –  Also included are six previously unissued tracks from the album sessions and elsewhere in his Verve discography, three of which were mixed for the first time from the original multi-tracks for this collection

  • Various - Some Kinda Magic ~ The Songs Of Jerry Ross (CD)

    Ace’s Songwriter Series brings you a valuable entry this month with a volume devoted to the songs of Philadelphia writer/producer/musician/A&R man Jerry Ross.

    An important figure in American popular music since the early 60s, Ross discovered, collaborated with and/or produced some of the most important names and records of the 1960s from Jerry Butler to Bobby Hebb to Keith of 98.6 fame to Gamble & Huff and beyond.

    He also found time to write or co-write some of the most enduring anthems of the decade along the way. This collection brings together two dozen Ross songs, some obscure and others globally renowned. Assembled with the approval of Jerry himself, it will have great appeal for fans of a wide range of classic 60s repertoire. Around 60% of the tracks are completely new to UK CD while many of the others have been unavailable for several years. Two of the original records featured here change hands when they DO change hands for in excess of £1000. Still an active record man in his 80s, Jerry s role in the growth of the Philadelphia Soul scene is all too often overlooked. It’s to be hoped that this collection will do much to put that wrong to rights.

  • King B.B. - Here’s One You Didn’t Know About (CD)

    The great bluesman B.B. King, who died this year, was one of the few artists whose every note was of interest.

    This 25-track CD of mostly previously unissued recordings are drawn from his sessions for Modern Records between 1954 and 1962. Be Careful Baby is a rare thing a B.B. King song that has never been released before in any version, while two tracks appeared on Ace’s 2014 RPM compilation Speak Easy. The version of Catfish Blues is from a completely different session to the familiar issued version and from B.B.’s commentary appears to be the version he played on the road.

    There are many comments from B.B. and the band which provide an insight into the recording process and B.B.’s relaxed and informal manner in the studio. The CD ends with a previous unheard interview, recorded backstage at the Fillmore Ballroom in San Francisco with radio station KSAY at the 10/10 spot on your dial.

    Warren Storm has been at the forefront of South Louisiana music for almost 60 years. In that time he’s sung rock` n` roll, R&B, soul, country and swamp pop, all with authority and aplomb. He’s also played drums for most of the artists in his peer group, most recently as the rhythm section anchor for LA supergroup Lil Band O Gold.

    Warren is still performing and recording. He spent two lengthy tenures recording for Huey Meaux in the 60s and 70s. For the first time ever, the majority of these recordings are brought together in this new 2CD Ace package. CD1 covers Warren’s 60s sides for Huey Meaux, and CD2 brings together everything he cut for Huey in the 70s and early 80s. More than half of these tracks have never appeared on CD until now.     Ace’s excavation of the tape vaults of Huey Meaux continues with a collection by one of the most popular artists of New Orleans R&B.

    After he left Chess in 1964, Clarence ”Frogman” Henry recorded for Meaux on and off for almost a decade, ”Baby Ain’t That Love” collects up almost every master he cut during the period plus four sides recorded in Memphis for Dial. The CD includes nine titles that have not been issued before.

    There’s plenty of good time New Orleans R&B, along with some solid soul, funk, a touch of country and even a bit of reggae to keep things varied and lively.

    Henry, who is still performing at the age of almost 80, has many admirers in the UK who will enjoy this collection.

Pay Day Jump focuses predominantly on the sides that Roy cut for DeLuxe records after King Records founder and boss Syd Nathan bought the label in late 1949. Hard Luck Blues, Boogie At Midnight, Love Don’t Love Nobody and all of Roy’s other big records for DeLuxe from the period are included all sounding better than they have ever done as they are mastered from recently-minted transfers of the original King acetates. Eight of the 24 selections are either completely unissued performances or previously unissued alternate takes, making this a must for even the most ardent Roy Brown collector.

  • Hardesty Herb & His Band - The Domino Effect (CD)

    For many years a leading light and featured soloist on innumerable New Orleans R&B sessions including just about every recording made by his long-term friend and employer Fats Domino Herb Hardesty has long been admired by rock n roll and R&B enthusiasts the world over. Like fellow New Orleans saxophonists, Lee Allen and Red Tyler, Herb seldom recorded under his own name during his peak years. Unlike Red and Lee, Herb’s one and only solo album was not issued at the time. Now, almost 55 years later, Ace proudly presents the 12 tracks from that unissued 1958 Mercury album, along with the only sides to have ever been issued commercially under Herb’s name, all drawn from the King vaults. As well as Herb’s tenor and trumpet virtuosity, The Domino Effect features pretty much the whole Fats Domino studio and road band (with the exception of Fats) in its prime. Herb himself was interviewed for and wholeheartedly endorses this release, which also features a booklet packed with wonderful photographs from Herb’s personal collection and a superb 6000 word sleeve note by George Korval. The Domino Effect offers a straight from the master tapes package of good-time New Orleans rockin R&B that will gladden the hearts of each and every fan of vintage instrumental music.

    ”Most UK football fans would be surprised to learn that one of the most instantly recognisable hand-clapping chants heard throughout England’s soccer grounds during the 60s was created by two brothers born on a small farm in rural Illinois, Lanny and Robert Duncan. Having settled in Los Angeles, Lanny was signed by A&R man Joe Saraceno, who was looking for likely pop stars in the early 60s teen idol mould. Lanny was not only a pop star in waiting but, when paired with songwriting partner Robert, also a source of catchy instrumentals, such as the Routers’ ’Let’s Go’ – an irresistibly infectious tune delivered by the twangy guitar of Tommy Tedesco, the rasping sax of Plas Johnson and the big beat of drummer Earl Palmer. Layered on top of everything was the most maddeningly contagious sequence of handclaps that virtually begged you to clap along. And the world did.Joe Saraceno and his right-hand man, writer and musician Michael Z Gordon, had already scored a couple of instrumental hits with their independent productions released on Liberty under the name of the Marketts. The duo had everything at their fingertips to create more of the same; top arrangers Ernie Freeman and Rene Hall and the cream of LA session guys were on call. They had so many good commercial ideas that they created a second vehicle for their productions under the name of the Routers. Saraceno took the master for ’Let’s Go’ to Joe Smith at Warner Bros and watched as the disc rose to #19 towards the end of 1962, and then make it up to #32 early the following year in the UK. Saraceno preferred his easygoing relationship with Smith and so transferred the Marketts’ future releases to Warner Bros (the best of which can be heard on their Ace CD ”Outer Space, Hot Rods & Superheroes” CDLUX 006).As well as providing ideas, helping with arrangements and production and writing some of the material, Michael Z Gordon also took charge of promotion by leading several line-ups of touring musicians (including Scott Walker at one time) out on the road as both the Marketts and the Routers. In the CD booklet Michael recalls some of his experiences on the road. He also very kindly provided several photos of the touring bands he led, several of which have not been seen before.”A-Ooga!!!   • Fireballs - Exotic Guitars From The Clovis Vaults (CD)

    Norman Petty was way ahead of the game back in the 50s when he realised that he could double his strike rate simply by releasing recordings under the separate identities of the Crickets and Buddy Holly, even though the recordings were basically made by the same group of musicians. This was a tactic he followed with the Fireballs to an even greater extent, changing their name according to fashion or the whim of the day. They began as simply the Fireballs, then became Chuck Tharp & the Fireballs, returned to being the Fireballs again before becoming Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs, which was then distilled down to just Jimmy Gilmer, before finally returning to being the Fireballs once more.

    Petty’s penchant for multiple identities has actually served us very well for our new giant 30-track Fireballs project. Added to a host of never before released instrumentals by the band are further tracks they cut under the alias of Guitars Inc and another 18 recorded while they were masquerading as the String-A-Longs in 1968. By then the original String-A-Longs, who Petty also recorded at his Clovis studios, had disbanded some three years previously. Petty had had the foresight to register the String-A-Longs name to himself and so he decided to mop up any residual interest in the group with an LP titled Wide World Hits”. This was actually recorded by the Fireballs although released under the String-A-Longs name.

    Fortunately for us the Fireballs never turn in anything less that an excellent performance no matter who they are supposed to be, so their String-A-Longs recordings are just as valuable as anything else they cut during their long and distinguished career. As well as the complete ”Wide World Hits” album we also include here ’Popi’, a rare 45 that was also released under the String-A-Longs moniker on Atco. To this we add a further five titles – ’Dock Of The Bay’, ’Light My Fire’, ’Love Child’, ’Hold Me Tight’ and ’Stormy’ – which were recorded for the project but have lain forgotten in Petty’s Clovis vaults ever since then.

    At the heart of the String-A-Longs sound was the sweet-toned Magnatone amplifier. Fireballs lead guitarist George Tomsco reflects today, ”It’s kind of strange that the String-A-Longs sound should begin and end with the Fireballs. We first used Norman’s Magnatone amplifiers back in 1959 when we recorded ’Nearly Sunrise’. The amp produced a very sweet tone which was just too pretty for me back then – I was 19 just wanted to rock’n’roll!” Petty subsequently pressed the String-A-Longs into using the amp on ’Wheels’ after the Fireballs had declined to record the tune. It went on to sell millions and George Tomsco is still kicking himself.

    The Guitars Inc project was another Petty experiment from around 1963. The rare ’Little Toy’ and ’Holiday Love’ have never been on CD before and we are delighted to include them here. There was even more good luck when our diligent researcher Alec Palao discovered a dusty old tape box in the Clovis vaults with Guitars Inc scrawled on it. This proved to be another great find and we are thrilled to be able to present the bright and breezy ’Mexican Firefly’ for the very first time anywhere.

    All of the titles on ”Exotic Guitars From The Clovis Vaults” are taken from Norman Petty’s expertly crafted master tapes and they sound as fresh and pristine as the day they were recorded.
