  • Williams Andre - Fortune Of Hits 2CD (CD)

Andre Williams’ Fortune records are square one for the deep blues and rhythm roots that spawned his “bad boy” persona. This 2-CD, 37-song set of Fortune hits represent the first time the entire body of this work is one place. In the same way his friend Ike Turner traveled a road from blues to rhythm & blues to rock, this compilation shows Andre’s evolution from doo-wop and rhythm & blues to Black rock & roll.
This set contains the record that put Andre on the map, ”Bacon Fat”, which was a legendary contribution to an era that mapped the land of a thousand dances, and also contains such iconic recordings as ”Jail Bait”, an early example of his envelope-pushing sexuality. Including a 20-page booklet of liner notes, A Fortune of Hits represents the single greatest body of work that contributed to the legend of Andre Williams.

  • Charles Ray - Complete Swing Time & Down Beat Recordings 1949-1952 2CD (CD)

The light blues and jazz of Ray Charles’ early recordings were heavily influenced by Nat King Cole, and Charles frequently recorded in a similar trio format. His sound changed dramatically soon after he signed to Atlantic in 1952: His singing became more forceful and confident, and his rock ’n’ soul performances were unlike anything he had done earlier for the Swing Time or Down Beat labels. Night Train’s two-disc set collects 45 of Charles’ rare recordings for the aforementioned independent labels, including several alternate takes, all of which find him in an imitative mode that pales beside his later trailblazing sides. It is interesting to hear a reserved Ray Charles croon his way through these arrangements, many of which are frankly lackluster despite the presence of supporting players like Stanley Turrentine (a situation not improved by the slightly murky sound quality and sometimes wobbly pitch of the source material). As a historical document, this is a comprehensive look at Charles’ early output, with session information and cursory notes, but without songwriting or publishing information. Buyers looking for early, raw R&B won’t find it here, but serious devotees of Ray Charles will appreciate this archival release. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide

  • Willie Tee - Teasin` You (CD)

The Willie Tee album Teasin’ You balances Wardel Quezerque’s productions with the unique talents of Willie Tee, whose style is a singular mix of jazz and R&B, and with the compositions of the great Earl King. While the title track Teasin’ You” has become a New Orleans golden oldie, this big body of work is as little known as it is excellent throughout. The CD also includes Tee’s outstanding subsequent productions for his own Gatur label, all of which showcases Tee’s too-cool-for-you persona. Micheal Dominici of the popular New Orleans entertainment magazine writes ”The combination of Earl King’s street savvy lyrics, Wardell Quezerque’s in the pocket production and Tee’s matter of fact delivery was perfect.

    ”A machine-gun spray of regional dance-party gems.”

    -Rolling Stone Magazine ———————————————

”A graceful and fluid vocalist equally adept with poignant ballads and saucy deep soul.”
