Various - My Goodness, Yes! Soul Treasures From The Silver Fox Label (LP)€27,00
Stant Barbara - My Mind Holds On To Yesterday (clear) (LP)€35,00
”Shiptown Clear Vinyl” = clear seafoam green.
Barbara Stant launched her career at Norfolk, Virginia’s own, Shiptown Records. Starting as one of the Idets (the labels own version of Motown’s Adantes), Barbara found herself singing in sessions for a variety of artists. But her own talent didn’t go unrecognized, and Noah Biggs (Shiptown’s mogul), soon realized it was time to feature Barbara (who entered the company as Barbara Holmes) as a feature artist in her own rights.

Various - Shrine Northern – The 60s Rarest Dance Label (LP)€35,00
Ace Records is proud to announce the purchase of the Shrine label and Eddie Singleton’s independent productions.
To celebrate we have compiled an album of the very best dance recordings the label made in 1965 and 1966, primarily in Washington DC.
The business’s failure made this music incredibly hard to find for record collectors and Shrine is rightly known as the rarest soul label.
It is much more than that though. The music was made by some one of the original founders of Motown, Raynoma Liles Gordy and her Motown-schooled cousin Mike Ossman, New York music business luminaries Eddie Singleton and Harry Bass and the up-and-coming talents of Washington’s Keni St Lewis and Maxx Kidd. The acts included the hugely respected Ray Pollard and fellow New Yorker J.D. Bryant, talented and established Washington and Baltimore acts Eddie Daye & The 4 Bars, Bobby Reed and the Enjoyables. Importantly, they discovered and developed the local talent of the area in the shape of the Cautions, Les Chansonettes, the Prophets and Shirley Edwards.
It took decades for UK Northern Soul fans to realise the significance of the label. It finally clicked for Stafford’s Top Of The World all-nighter DJs who searched out the incredibly hard to find later releases and played them to the cult-following of the rare soul scene. The scarcity was caused by Shrine pressing up a batch of fourteen future singles but only getting a handful released before they folded. The vast majority of the later releases were destroyed in a warehouse fire or simply binned as stillborn commercial failures.
• Such was the scarcity that when the first Shrine compilations were issued in 1990, the Prophets tracks from Eddie Singleton’s master tapes were assumed to be unreleased – until Shrine sleuth Andy Rix later obtained one from a group member.
The music captures the exuberance of soul music in its peak years. The rhythms are pounding, the vocals soaring and the songs positive and cleverly composed. Undeniably Motown-influenced, they never copy others’ songs but feature the group harmonies of New York City on the Counts, Enjoyables and Prophets singles, while the Ray Pollard and J.D. Bryant tracks have that city’s big ballad soul sound. Les Chansonettes and the D C Blossoms are shimmering femme group sounds at their most tantalising.
The label produced soul in many shades but here we’ve concentrated on its in-house dance specialties. Don’t worry about the price-tags; just listen to that quality.

Sunny And the Sunliners - Mr. Brown Eyed Soul Vol.2 (LP)€29,90
Sunny Ozuna is a living legend and a man worthy of praise on many levels. In the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than Sunny is. He became a star right out of high school in the late ’50s and hasn’t looked back in the seven decades since. Among countless other honors and notable achievements, Sunny was the first Latino artist to appear on Dick Clark’s ”American Bandstand” (in 1963). He penned ”Smile Now, Cry Later,” a hit for him and The Sunliners, which along with the theater masks that grace the album’s cover, became staples in the Chicano Soul and Lowrider Soul cultures.
We have been fans of Sunny & The Sunliners’ music for a long time. We first got in touch with Sunny to try to reissue some of his records in 2013 but we didn’t sign a deal until 2015. It took a trip to San Antonio and then two years of steady phone calls before they decided ”if you have been chasing us for this long, you must be serious.” With Sunny’s blessing we started getting everything mastered, scanned, and planned. First we released 2017’s Mr Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1 compilation that put rare 7″ sides next to some of his biggest hits and mixed in some choice album cuts for good measure. In the wake of that, we released three of Sunny’s full lengths with their original track lists and art: Smile Now, Cry Later, Little Brown Eyed Soul, and The Missing Link – all of which were Record Store Day releases that raised money for the victims of 2017’s Hurricane Harvey. For the 7″ collectors, we reissued five 45s, making some very hard to come by sides widely available again and pressing some tunes on the format for the first time. In 2020, as an homage to Sunny, we released Dear Sunny… a compilation of Big Crown artists covering Sunny & The Sunliners songs. Through all of this we were able to do what we set out to do: get Sunny’s music to a new audience of people and make it all accessible and available again to his existing fanbase. Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His music and the music that it directly influenced are seeing a resurgence in popularity in the last few years. With any luck at all, our efforts played some small part in that, and on that note, we present Mr Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 2 – another compilation curated by us, where we dig a little deeper into Sunny’s catalog and pull some lesser known gems that hold court with his hits. Hats off again to Mr Brown Eyed Soul himself, San Antonio’s own, Sunny Ozuna, we are sure you will enjoy the music.

King Elizabeth - Living In The Last Days (LP)€27,00
Limited colored vinyl LP pressing. Memphis soul gospel queen Elizabeth King recorded her first single in 1970, and if all had gone as planned, she would have made her first album a few years later. Instead, it took another half century, but Living In The Last Days, the latest sacred soul long player from Memphis’s Bible and Tire imprint, captures King at the height of her powers, with the intervening decades only serving to stoke the flames of one of the most memorable voices in modern gospel music. Living In The Last Days is a triumph from the very first intimate vocal notes of the arresting opening track, ”No Ways Tired,” to the similarly moving closer, ”You’ve Got To Move,” dual studies in intensity that each build to a burning climax, bookending a searing selection of songs burnished by the down-home grooves of the Sacred Soul Sound Section. Additionally, the Sensational Barnes Brothers are on board for harmony vocals as are King’s old D-Vine Spirituals label mates the Vaughn Sisters and the D-Vine Spiritualettes.

Fletcher Darrow - My Young Misery (LP)€27,50
Kent have released two Darrow Fletcher CDs, but he has never had a vinyl LP of his own – of any description. This compilation concentrates on his Chicago years, though it adds a rare demo, Hope For Love, only previously available on a Masterpieces Kent CD. Kent have also included his one-off late-70s version of fellow Chicago-born writers Grey & Hanks No Limit, also originally a Masterpieces track and a now-deleted Kent Select 45; these fetch £100+ on some sales lists. The mid-60s sides speak for themselves. He began his career with the acclaimed soul blast of The Pain Gets A Little Deeper (an Elton John favourite of the time!) and followed up with dancefloor classics My Young Misery, What Good Am I Without You, Infatuation and Gotta Draw The Line. As was common in those days, the hip dance sides were coupled with tender ballads such as Sitting There That Night, Little Girl and My Judgement Day. Those were particularly well received in his Chicago homebase and have been admired by slow-groove scenes like Lowriders in Los Angeles ever since. Darrow s late 60s recordings, though recorded in Chicago, were issued on Los Angeles labels controlled by Universal. By 1971 his producer – stepfather Johnnie Haygood – had reverted to using his own Chicago imprint Genna for the last recording. Compiled by Ady Croasdell.
Cochran Wayne - Same (180 gram, Gatefold) (LP)€22,00
Signed by Chess, Cochran and the Riders released their first LP in 1967. Produced by Abner Spector with sessions at Miami’s Criteria Studios and Muscle Shoals’ Fame Studios, the cleverly-titled ”Wayne Cochran” offered up a mix of popular R&B and soul songs which apparently served as a reflection of the group’s live act. To be honest, if you were looking for something original and ground breaking, this wasn’t the place to start. While Cochran’s performances were quite energetic (having one of the era’s tightest backing bands certainly didn’t hurt), none of the twelve arrangements strayed far from the originals. I’m guessing that most of the things that supposedly made these guys such a killer live act simply couldn’t be replicated on vinyl – not to imply that the collection was bad. It wasn’t. Individually most of the songs were quite good, but it you were familiar with the originals, stripped of Cochran’s in-concert craziness, they simply couldn’t compete.
Little Beaver - Party Down (Gold, Ltd) (LP)€35,00
Metallic Gold Vinyl
Coloured Vinyl, Limited Edition
Willie Hale a.k.a. Little Beaver (so dubbed as a child because of his prominent front teeth) was one of the extraordinarily talented musicians Henry Stone assembled at his Hialeah, FL-based T.K. Records label and its assorted imprints. Among the artists who recorded for Stone were K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Timmy Thomas, Gwen McCrae, Betty Wright, and Benny Latimore…and backing them on a lot of those records was Hale, laying down mellow ‘n’ funky, jazz-influenced licks on his hollow-body Gibson. Hale’s talent was so distinctive that when Stone finally let Hale step out of the studio shadows to record his own album on the Cat imprint, the effects were immediate and long-lasting. Featuring contributions from Thomas, Wright, Latimore, and Jaco Pastorius (under the name Nelson “Jocko” Padron), 1974’s Party Down scored a #2 hit with its title track and has been repeatedly sampled by latter-day rap artists ranging from People Under the Stairs to Jay Z. himself (the “Party Life” track on his American Gangster album).
Our Real Gone reissue of this nonstop groove-athon features a fresh remastering by Mike Milchner at SonicVision, and comes in a metallic gold vinyl pressing to honor the gold record Little Beaver has hanging on his wall on the front cover…limited to 1000 copies!.
