Head Cat - Fool`s Paradise (Silver Vinyl) (LP)
€29,90Uusintapainos! Few musicians are as synonymous with heavy metal as Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister. But long time fans know that ol’ Lemmy has tackled other styles over the years, including British Invasion pop (as part of the Rockin’ Vicars) and space rock (as part of Hawkwind). Additionally, Lemmy has covered a few country and/or rockabilly tunes over the years, including a metallic version of Stand By Your Man,” Carl Perkins’ ”Matchbox,” and Johnny Cash’s ”Big River.” So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that in the early 21st century, Lemmy launched a rockabilly side project, the Head Cat. Taking a break from his beloved Rickenbacker bass, Lemmy handles vocals (which resemble little of the throaty growl of his Motorhead work), acoustic guitar, and harmonica duties, and is joined by ex-Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom and lead guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Danny B. Harvey. As evidenced by their 2006 debut, Fool’s Paradise, the trio is one rockin’ good time — a much needed antidote to the computer/software enhanced state of popular music. Expectedly, this isn’t going to melt your speakers upon first listen like Ace of Spades did all those years ago. That said, it’s certainly a worthwhile listen for die-hard fans to hear Lemmy tackle covers of some of his favorite standards — ”Not Fade Away,” ”Well All Right,” as well as the two aforementioned tracks, ”Big River” and ”Matchbox.””

Hart Beth & Bonamassa Joe - Don`t Explain (2LP, Transparent) (LP)
€29,90”Fans of guitar master Joe Bonamassa will be delighted that 2011 was such a prolific year in his career. First came the fine, rootsy Dust Bowl, then 2, the second chapter in his Black Country Communion project’s catalog. Don’t Explain, a collection of soul, blues, and jazz-oriented covers in collaboration with vocal firebrand Beth Hart marks his third entry this year. The ten-song set of blues and soul is a logical extension of her vocal contribution to ”No Love on the Street” from Dust Bowl. Opening is a thoroughly raucous contemporary blues reading of Ray Charles’ ”Sinner’s Prayer,” followed by a quirky version of Tom Waits’ ”Chocolate Jesus,” and an unusual cover of contemporary jazz-pop singer/songwriter Melody Gardot’s ”You Heart Is as Black as Night.” On this cut, a string orchestra adds a touch of perversity; it offers the impression of a femme fatale singing a Brecht-Weill number in a smoky cabaret in front of a moody string orchestra, buoyed by a brooding electric blues quintet. ”For My Friends,” a Bill Withers’ tune, is a big, nasty, jagged blues number that keeps the funky groove intact. The title track, a number closely associated with Billie Holiday, falls flat. Hart tries too hard to employ Holiday’s phrasing, the string orchestrations are overblown, and Bonamassa’s crew is too reverent. This formula also mars the remake of Aretha Franklin’s ”Ain’t No Way” that closes the set. Far better are readings of Etta James’ signatories ”I’d Rather Go Blind,” and ”Something’s Got a Hold on Me.” Hart’s emotive, throaty delivery is perfectly suited to both songs, and she resists trying to ape James’ phrasing. Since they follow one another directly, the musical difference between them also showcase’s Hart’s diverse abilities. The former is a soul burner, the latter a gospel blues. Bonamassa and band accent her every phrase with requisite rowdiness, sting, and grit. The pair’s only vocal collaboration is a burning read of Delaney & Bonnie’s ”Well, Well.” With Anton Fig’s breaks and rim shots underscoring Arlan Scheirbaum’s electric piano fills, Bonamassa’s burning leads, the chunky, rhythmic foundation from guitarist Blondie Chaplin, and Carmine Rojas’ bassline, Hart and the lead guitarist trade whip-smart call and response vocals with enough raw country-soul to bring the song to a new audience. While not a perfect recording, Don’t Explain is a good one, whose strengths are numerous enough to warrant a second go round”

Hart Beth & Bonamassa Joe - Seesaw 2LP (Ltd, clear) (LP)
€29,90VIHDOINKIN UUSINTAJULKAISU!
Original release information:
Beth and Joe have done it again. This effervescent follow up album to the exquisite Don’t Explain is again stellar, yet more upbeat, high energy, soulful and rockin. No sophomore slump here. Beth & Joe have hit their stride and perhaps are even more in tune with working together on the second go around.A classy choice of songs have been selected, previously recorded by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, and Nina Simone. From big band sounds, to sultry ballads, to balls out growl and howl, to French inspired with Arlan Schierbaum on accordion. Somehow the diversity of the songs are tied together to make a cohesive whole. Anton Fig gives a powerhouse performance on drums with the rest of the excellent band Blondie Chaplin and Carmine Rojas rounding everything out.Vintage songs and in a sense vintage recording as well. Producer Kevin Shirley’s method of recording live in the studio with the entire band playing together is the antithesis of so much of today’s manipulated and computerized music. This band is interacting with each other and having FUN – and you can hear it in the music! Later in the process the horns by Lee Thornburg and Ron Dziubla are added as well as the strings by Jeff Bova which just takes everything to yet another level.Beth Hart not only has an effing astounding voice, but the ability to truly connect with the material and make it her own, then communicate the emotion behind it. Joe Bonamassa augments the songs and compliments Beth’s vocals perfectly with tasteful guitar work that is restrained in places and in some places he really lets loose. He shines on the solo at the end of I Love You More than You’ll Ever Know with bluesy, soulful work.Stunning record. Brilliantly done. Guaranteed to brighten your day. One of the best albums of the year. A big sassy bitch of an album! -
