The colors are nicely balanced and rich, with deep, pure blacks. Minor edge enhancement, fine film grain and artifacts are revealed throughout. Overall, the picture quality is generally mediocre. Sound Quality: 2.5 (5 is the highest rating) The Dolby(r) Digital 5.1-channel repurposed soundtrack adds some dimensional spread across the screen to the original mono sound. Additionally, some of the original stereophonic music has been incorporated. This multichannel enhancement seems to be limited to the screen channels with very subtle surround envelopment for the music.

€30,00Quick ViewThis release gives us the August 24, 1974 show, but unfortunately the tape runs out after the ”If you talk in your sleep” so they added the ending of the August 29 dinner show. As we all know he did some major changes in this new tour from August 19th ’till September 2nd. On the opening night he started with a whole new repertoire, and started with the songs ”Big boss man”, ”Proud mary” and ”Down in the alley”. The material from the opening show was available on the two bootleg releases ”If you talk in your sleep” & From Sunset Blv to Paradise Rd. The Closing show (September 2nd) that is in my opinion one of Elvis’ weirdest show ever and can be found on the bootleg release ”Desert Storm”. I had great expecations of this release, but to be honest I was a little dissapointed when I heard this show. He was not inspired at all, and haven’t heard one song that was a little better than average. Fever did bring a smile on my face, softly as I leave you was nice. Also rare is Early Morning rain, but incomplete. I think the highlight of the show is the introduction where he spoke about the big fat painted angels. Also the dialogue before ”Can’t help” was fun, were he was bragging about his diamond rings. But to conclude this CD, you will have a rare show, with some unusual songs. I’m certain a lot of fans will like this show, but this will not be my favorite FTD release, that belongs to the ”Memphis sessions”.” (Elvis-collectors.com)”

Prisoners - In From The Cold (Käytetty CD)

The Prisoners pre-empted the visceral energy of the Hives and the White Stripes and anticipated the baggy shuffle of the Charlatans and the Inspiral Carpets. Lead singer Graham Day’s scorching Hendrix-influenced guitar riffs and organist James Taylor’s hypnotising Hammond whirls and irresistible go go rhythms not only changed my life but far more influential music types too.
In From The Cold, their fourth LP, originally released on Stiff subsidiary Countdown, was the band’s swan song. It’s not difficult to see why. Live gigs were already incendiary affairs. Graham picked up his guitar amp and speakers and chucked them at James at one gig at the Clarendon in London. Another time he slammed down his guitar and stormed off stage leaving the rest of the band twiddling their thumbs at the Escape Club in Brighton. Being holed up in a studio with producer Troy Tate for a whole five months, an exceedingly long time in Prisoners’ terms, (previous albums had taken a mere three days to put down) only led to further outbreaks of internecine tension and rivalry.
By the time of the album’s release, Stiff were on the verge of going bust. The LP was available for just two weeks. After the initial pressing sold out there was no money left to press up any more. As a result few got to hear what would in many circles be hailed the Prisoners’ finest moment. That is until now with this fabulous reissue of the original LP plus five bonus tracks. Along with Dean Rudland’s informative sleeve notes and photos from the time, we get cuts like Mourn My Health, Deceiving Eye and Wish The Rain, which showcase Day’s whisky-sodden lyrical intensity. Laced with melancholia, despair and sheer hopelessness, they tear at the heart strings. The album’s closer: Main Title Theme (The Lesser Evil) is a dark, brooding instrumental up there with John Barry’s Ipcress File soundtrack and a hint at where James Taylor would be heading with his quartet after the band’s demise, while the infectious All You Gotta Do Is Say, co-written with Graham’s girlfriend Fay Hallam (of fellow Countdown act Makin’ Time), could have given the Prisoners the hit single they so rightly deserved.
As for the bonus tracks included here, we get the band’s delicious 1986 single, Whenever I’m Gone plus its B-sides Promised Land and Grave Digger, and culled from Rare And Unissued, a compilation of demos and rarities on Hangman records from 1988, are the tracks Happiness For Once and the magnificent Pop Star Party. The latter’s lyrics lambasted Stiff Records but it was the few seconds silence during the song’s intro that caused a stir. It sounded as if the tape had been broken and hastily glued back together again. Graham, the story went, had been in a fight with the label. Unhappy with the company’s treatment of the group, he had snatched the tape out of Stiff’s owner Dave Robinson’s hands and run off with it. Sadly, this wasn’t true – the track had simply been mastered over leader tape – but it helps shed light on a group who, despite having an extremely intelligent songsmith in Day and arguably the most effusive and soulful white vocalist since Marriott and Winwood, never quite managed to make it.

€20,00Quick ViewWhen you’re a versatile artist with eclectic tastes, the temptation (especially with your first solo CD) is to show everything you can do. And if you’re writing about such an artist, the typical approach would be to drive home the fact that Joe Blow is the Lon Chaney of the guitar, a chameleon-of-all-trades with a thousand tricks up his sleeve.
But for his debut, Jeff Ross, a veteran of many bands in many styles, recorded a blues album, not a combo platter. Sure, there are tracks that offer varying shades, but if you bought this album, a) you’re probably wanting to hear some blues, and b) you’re into (and might even play) guitar. And so, a blues guitar album you shall get.

Various - 21st Century Doo Wop (Käytetty CD)

Old doo woppers never die it seems – they seem to go one forever, and better yet, they infect younger brethren with the same glorious desire to maintain the craziest part of rock’n’roll.
Doo wop never quite went away, and this excellent new collection samples new and recent recordings from the groups that are keeping the flag flying. Perhaps it is the simplicity of the concept that has kept the genre alive – a group of singers getting up and harmonising together as it was in the old street corner days in the Bronx – with no complicated instrumental parts required. New York collector, producer and Crystal Ball Records boss Ed Engel has assembled this 26 track collection from a variety of acts who have either formed, re-formed or kept going throughout the 80s, 90s and noughties. The tracks here are broadly reflective of the neo-doo wop era of the early 60s, when the classic forms had generous dollops of fun and extra blistering pop harmonies layered on to them.
Uptempo sounds are well represented by the fast opener My Heart from the currently active Del Vikings, the rockin’ Symphony Of Love from Frankie & The Fashions, and Moonlight Love from the Emotions. The latter track evokes the best of the late 50s Belmonts sound, which should make it an instant stand out. Fans of the demented bullfrog school of bass singing will also have plenty to delight them, as several cuts feature ever increasing complexities of lip knotting bass lines, none more so than the Crosstones’ I’ve Got A Boy that features a rarer distaff lead. Ballad fans will find a real treat with Blue Star from Nicky Addeo & the Nite Owls, which has Nicky hitting stratospheric falsetto notes, and Ace favourites the Legends Of Doo Wop (check out their own recent CD on Ace CDCHD 824) come up with their wonderful version of Dear Lord.
Doo wop is of course ever popular with younger modern groups, and Germany’s Crystalairs show a full range of harmonious talents on the splendid Little Miss Pinocchio, whilst Britain’s Roomates are more than equal to the task with their I Know You Cheated. Both of these are strong original songs.
One of the gripes that collectors sometimes have with doo wop is over the predictability of the sometimes limited lyrics, but here this seems to no longer be a problem as several tracks feature much more imaginative writing. The Regals’ Detective Of Love namechecks a suitably wide range of fictitious detectives, whilst the Ovations’ High School Reunion tells the ever popular tale of musical reminiscing with your old friends. The Ovations, who originally were recorded by Neil Leverson (of Randy & the Rainbows fame), represent the circa ’64 era when neo-doo wop was on the wane. Their excellent 1987 Crystal Ball album, from which this track is taken, is apparently due for re-issue soon in the US. The final cut, Echoes From The Tiles from Tuesday At Eight, the only a cappella track here, picks up on the themes from the famed Looking For An Echo song and takes them a bit further – to the extent that the singer is now writing for an oldies magazine!! Perish the thought!
With production values and sound excellent throughout, this collection will do much to further the cause of modern doo wop. As well as the goodies described above, fans will also find new tracks from favourites like the Elegants, the Devotions, the Del Satins, the Quotations, the Mello Kings, Kenny Vance (ex-Jay & The Americans) and many more. What a rockin’ good way to start the year!
